A Quick look Around the Majors
So much for my view that Gerrit Cole was making the Pittsburgh Pirates opening day roster. The Pirates sent their young prospect back down to the minors despite a solid spring training… Chase Headley may not be ready for the start of the MLB season as he continues to deal with a jammed thumb… Fredi Gonzalez has pretty much confirmed that Julio Teheran will be the Atlanta Braves’ fifth starter… Pete Kozma is set to be the St. Louis Cardinals opening day short stop, replacing Rafael Furcal, who will miss the 2013 season after undergoing Tommy John Surgery. Kozma will have no fantasy baseball relevance and the Cardinals ought to be on the phone calling up the Texas Rangers to get Elvis Andrus, as the Rangers have a surplus at the shortstop position…. Mark Teixeira recently revealed that his injury is more serious than first thought, a torn tendon sheath has the Yankees slugger considering surgery which would sideline him for the entire 2013 season… Cole Hamels has been tagged by the Phillies as their opening day starter, ahead of Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee…. Congratulations to Puerto Rico who upset Japan in the semi-finals of the World Baseball Classic, defeating the two-time defending champions of the event.
Reviewing the LOC Draft.
LoC Draft Statistics:
- In total 300 players were selected for the League of Champions 2013 Season.
- 174 of the players are positional players, and a 126 are pitchers.
- A total of 110 infielders were drafted (including catchers)
- 84 starting pitchers were selected.
- 64 outfielders were drafted.
Round Analysis: I’ll take a look at the first 5 rounds and identify who I think was the best and worst pick of the round.
You can take a look at the full team I drafted here as well as my reasons for making each pick.
Round 1:
Best Pick: Miguel Cabrera (4th overall) was a bargin for the team named after the existing Toronto MLB club. Cabrera has been the most consistent hitter in the last four MLB seasons. Certainly a value with the 4th pick;
Worst Pick: Jared Weaver was selected by the defending LoC Champion, Al Kickurass with the 10th overall pick. This was certainly a reach pick and Al Kickurass had a chance to grab David Price or Cole Hamels instead of Weaver. Weaver’s Average Draft Position for 2013 drafts is 38.2;
Round 2:
Best Pick: Prince Fielder was drafted with the 21st overall pick by Under Ceege, well below his ADP of 11.4;
Worst Pick: Madison Bumgartner, was drafted with the 14th overall pick by the Mountain Cats. This is before David Price and R.A. Dickey, last years respective Cy Young winners. Bumgartner’s ADP is 50.8;
Round 3:
Best Pick: Matt Kemp was drafted 27th overall by the Vancouver Canadians. I would say that’s a bit low for a player who’s ADP is 5.9;
Worst Pick: Brandon Morrow with the 36th overall by Siba Style. This was a bit of a homer pick in my opinion. While Morrow will have a good season, he was selected nearly 60 spots higher than his which sits at 107.6;
Round 4:
Best Pick: Justin Upton was selected with the 47th overall pick by the Hooter Hunters. This is an exceptional value for a player being who’s ADP is 25.5;
Worst Pick: Max Scherzer went to Ravishing Ricky Bo with the 43rd pick. Scherzer probably could have been drafted in the 5th or 6th since his ADP is 83.7;
Round 5:
Best Pick: Ravishing Ricky Bo made up for his bad 4th round pick, by grabbing David Wright with the 54th overall selection. Wright’s ADP is 24.1;
Worst Pick: The Mountain Lions took Wilin Rosario with the 59th pick overall, ahead of Victor Martinez (60th overall). A look at ADps indicates Martinez is being drafted nearly 20 picks ahead of Rosario, who sits at 103.7;
