Over the last few seasons, the Houston Texans have been one of the best teams in the NFC South. Despite being plagued by injuries in 2015, the team won the division with a 9-7 record and hosted an AFC wild card game before falling to the Kansas City Chiefs. Along with the injuries, the Texans also had inconsistent play from their skill positions in 2015. Let’s recap the 2015 season for the Houston Texans.
The Houston Texans entered the 2015 season with a quarterback competition between Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett. Hoyer would win the competition and keep the starting job for most of the season. Hoyer was inconsistent in his quarterback play, averaging 14 fantasy points per game. He also missed five games due to injury. Houston will likely find a new quarterback for the 2016 season.
Houston Texans 2015 Fantasy Football Recap
Over the past few seasons, Arian Foster has been one of the best running backs from a fantasy standpoint. That is when he is on the field. Foster’s major issue has been staying healthy. He came into the season with a torn groin, and once he returned from that injury he suffered a torn achilles and was out for the season. Houston relied on Alfred Blue and Brent Grimes to carry the ball. Blue led the team with 800 total yards and three touchdowns, but he averaged five points per game. If Houston releases Foster in the offseason, expect the Texans to target a running back in the draft or in free agency for the 2016 season.
The Texans have had one of the best wide receivers in the league in Andre Johnson. In the off season, Johnson left for their division rival the Indianapolis Colts, which opened the door for DeAndre Hopkins. Hopkins proved that he can a number one wide receiver. The third-year player out of Clemson averaged 13 fantasy points per week and finished with 1,500 yards and 11 touchdowns. Hopkins finished as the sixth-ranked wide receiver with 211 total points in 2015. Hopkins should be targeted in the second round of 2016 fantasy drafts. Houston’s next leading receiver was Nate Washington who totaled 650 yards and for touchdowns followed by Cecil Shorts with 500 yards and two touchdowns. With teams trying to stop Hopkins, Washington and Shorts are worth a late round pick next season.
Houston didn’t have much to offer in regards to a productive tight end for fantasy players this season. Their leading tight end was Ryan Griffin who totaled 20 receptions for 250 yards and two touchdowns. Griffin’s limited production means he should be taken as no more than a late round flyer in 2016 drafts.
Houston’s skill position players are worth a look in 2016 drafts. With their division not being known for defense they should be in a lot of high scoring games in 2016, which means more opportunities to score fantasy points for your team. If the Texans can get more consistent play from their quarterback and running back next season, they should have no problem repeating their playoff appearance in 2016.
