This past Sunday, former WTA Chairman & CEO Stacey Allaster joined the International Sports Report’s Lins O’Connor and Peter Irvine on TSN 1050 Radio in Toronto, Canada to discuss the charges of match fixing in tennis.
In one of her first interviews since stepping down from her post: Stacey points out tennis has 0 tolerance for match fixing and that there is no definitive evidence in the current report. Stacey also points out flaws in the algorithm that is pointing to match fixing. Allaster explains that its a challenge to police all the tennis taking place, especially at the lower levels. She admits the risk is higher at the lower levels. Stacey finds there are more allegations of match fixing on the ATP side rather than the WTA. Allaster explains the current process that lead to 18 fines being handed out. Stacey suggests names released in relation to match fixing are based on suspicious betting patterns. She points out Lleyton Hewitt has been named as a suspect and given his return to the sport from time off at the matches in question, the allegations are unfounded. Allaster explains the investment in the tennis integrity unit and their work with book makers to prevent match fixing.
