We have seen top MLB players get paid serious money this offseason, including Jason Hayward’s mega deal with the Cubs for eight years and $184 million. We also watched as Zack Greinke and David Price inked huge contracts. But there are still some intriguing players who have yet to sign with a team. Will Yoenis Cespedes sign with the Orioles? Will Justin Upton receive a long-term contract? Let’s see where the top remaining MLB free agents might land.
Remaining MLB Free Agents: Where Will They Land?
Yoenis Cespedes
Latest Rumors: The Baltimore Orioles are willing to pay roughly $85 million for Cespedes.
Reports suggest that the Orioles have grown frustrated with the demands of Chris Davis. He has yet to sign with a team, but the Orioles are now looking for another slugger to replace Davis in the lineup. Cespedes is a good fit for the Orioles and the offer that they’ve made to him (around $75-90 million for five years) should be quite appealing to him.
Justin Upton
Latest Rumors: The St. Louis Cardinals, Orioles, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, and Texas Rangers are in the mix to acquire Upton, but are still waiting for his asking price to fall even farther.
Justin Upton will land on an American League team. Keep an eye out for him to sign with the Angels or the Detroit Tigers, who have both openly expressed their interest in upgrading their outfield.
Chris Davis
Latest Rumors: Davis still has a seven-year, $150 million contract offer from the Orioles, but they are becoming desperate while he continues to turn his nose up at the offer.
What is he waiting for? No one has a clue. He seems to believe he’s worth more than what the Orioles have offered him, but he seems unlikely to get it. No other team has expressed much interest in the slugger – yet.
Dexter Fowler
Latest Rumors: Fowler has been followed by the Cleveland Indians and the White Sox.
The problem here is that Fowler is tied to a draft pick compensation, which makes him less attractive to most teams. The most probable scenario is that the Indians withdraw from the hunt for Fowler and the White Sox conclude their offseason signings with the speedy outfielder in wake of losing Alexei Ramirez to the Padres.
Howie Kendrick
Latest Rumors: The Arizona Diamondbacks have reached out Kendrick and are currently negotiating a contract.
It wouldn’t be surprising if the D-Backs sign yet another superstar. They are clearly all-in for this year’s campaign after signing Zach Greinke and trading for Shelby Miller.
Yovanni Gallardo
Latest Rumors: The Toronto Blue Jays have reached out to Gallardo.
It would be a nice fit if Gallardo did sign with the Blue Jays. But do the Jays want Gallardo enough to lose a draft pick?
Ian Kennedy
Latest Rumors: The Kansas City Royals are “focused” on Ian Kennedy, according to John Heyman.
After Wei-Yin Chen signed with the Miami Marlins, the Royals list of pitchers to keep an eye on has been reduced to Kennedy and Gallardo. If they sign either of the two players, they’ll be forced to sacrifice their first round draft pick.
What do you think? Who will sign first?
