With Lucha Underground’s season two confirmed, now would be a great time to shake up the roster a bit. Do they need to? Not necessarily, but some fresh blood wouldn’t be a bad thing either, so I thought it would be interesting to write a series looking at who in Lucha Underground should go, who should stay, and who they should bring in. For the sake of argument, anyone with a championship at the end of the first season is off the table since they would obviously be staying, but who should join them? Who should Lucha Underground sign?
REY MYSTERIO JR.
This one probably goes without saying, but initially I wasn’t going to put Rey on the list. At first I was thinking if he came to Lucha Underground he may need to take more of a behind the scenes/mentor role due to his bad knees, however, the more I thought about it, Lucha Underground would be the perfect place for him BECAUSE of his bad knees. Their taping schedule would be the perfect place for Mysterio to showcase what he does best on a weekly basis but only actually work once a month, freeing him up to continue working AAA if he wants.
Outside of the ring, as I mentioned, Rey would still be a fantastic asset to Lucha Underground. Mysterio would be a perfect mentor to the younger luchadors in the Temple, much in the same way that Konnan has been. Rey would even have a lot of opportunity if he chose to step out of the ring. Aside from being a mentor or an agent Rey could do commentary. Like Vampiro, Mysterio could easily cover both English and Spanish commentary. Fans want Rey in the Temple and there is plenty for Mysterio to do, both inside and outside of the ring.
PJ BLACK
There may not be a more perfect fit for Lucha Underground than PJ Black. He’s agile, an amazing high flyer and I feel he’d mesh well with the other talent, some of whom he knows well from his WWE days (ie: Johnny Mundo). Black was underutilized in WWE. Granted, he wasn’t the best talker, he made up for it with ability, much like Neville currently. Lucha Underground has shown that you don’t need to be strong on the mic to be successful, not to sound cliché but you can do your talking in the ring. The only two men to hold the Lucha Underground Championship, neither one of them uttered a word in the entire first season. Plus, Black isn’t terrible at promos, he just isn’t the best.
To see the former Justin Gabriel mix it up with the likes of Drago, Pentago Jr. or Son Of Havoc would be a dream, not to mention the epic matches he could have if he crossed paths with fellow South Africa native Angelico. PJ Black may be signed with Global Force Wrestling right now, but if he were to sign with Lucha Underground, he would be a force to be reckoned with.
JENNIFER BLAKE
The women of Lucha Libre aren’t seen as frail, as they are involved in matches with the men as much as each other. Lucha Underground opted to keep this tradition alive as opposed to having a separate Women’s division, and it has proved fruitful. Ivelisse got over quite a bit through her program with Son of Havoc and Angelico even becoming one of the first Trios champions, and Sexy Star has remained a very popular member of the roster. The Canadian born Jennifer Blake has been working in AAA since 2009 so she is certainly no stranger to the Mexican style, and her bubbly personality outside the ring, and her intensity inside would make “Girl Dynamite” a welcome addition to the Lucha Underground roster.
LA PARKA
I know I have griped about age on some of these (particularly part 1 “Who Should Go”) but La Parka may be an exception. Though he is nearing 50, La Parka is a legend in Mexico having worked with every major promotion there, and in North America from his time in World Championship Wrestling. He has a wealth of knowledge to pass down, and comes with instant name recognition. He may have a part time role similar to Blue Demon Jr. in season one, but if La Parka were to enter the Temple, I would love to see him stick around, possibly be a foil for Pentagon Jr. and Vampiro.
CHRIS SABIN
Over a decade ago when I watched TNA there was one person who really grabbed my attention and that man was Chris Sabin. The guy is so fluid in the ring with no wasted movement. That style would gel excellently with the Lucha Underground locker room. He’s still fairly young at only 33, he has a lot left to give, but he’s also been around long enough that much of the roster could benefit from his years of experience. Sabin may be with Global Force Wrestling currently, but there is no question, he would fit in with Lucha Underground perfectly.
There are five wrestlers who could flourish in Lucha Underground. I love the show already, but if I needed another reason to tune in, adding any of these names to the roster would be the key. Who knows, with rumours that Alberto El Patron was unhappy with how he was booked in season one, and Big Ryck announcing his retirement, maybe we will see some fresh faces in the Temple for season two.
