Lucha Underground fans the world over rejoiced and breathed a collective sigh of relief this past Monday when it was announced that Lucha Underground would indeed be getting a second season. The announcement came on the heels of a very passionate tirade from Vampiro. It could be entirely possible that Vampiro’s rant may have been the catalyst that lit a fire under the executives asses to start things rolling on season two, since his venting did spark a great deal of feedback from fans.
Lucha Underground announces Second Season
Vamp was not shy about placing blame and telling it like it is. He talked about how special Lucha Underground was, how much it meant to the fans, how much it meant to the cast and crew, relating it especially to himself saying it made him feel alive again. The blame in his rant was pointed squarely at the decision makers behind the scenes. The people who are the final say on a season two, and at that time, they hadn’t said much. Vampiro basically said that they had something really special and didn’t even know it, because they were humming and hawing about producing a second season. Maybe it was Vampiro’s rant, or maybe it was just coincidence but a second season is coming, and with the way the first season ended, fans couldn’t be happier.
(We’re entering spoiler territory if you haven’t seen Ultima Lucha yet, you’ve been warned)
The season finale closed with a montage of epilogues for various luchadors, many of which, while they weren’t cliff hangers, certainly had an air of unfinished business. From Vampiro guiding Pentagon Jr. further into darkness, to the unlikely trio of Son Of Havoc, Ivelisse, and Angelico riding off into the night, on the hunt to regain their Trios Championships. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the debut of Melina in Lucha Underground, coming to the aid of her old flame Johnny Mundo. Death owned the night as well, with Mil Muertes and the Disciples Of Death taking all of the gold. There is certainly a lot to look forward to in the second season of Lucha Underground, but the question I have is what took so long? Admittedly, it has only been seven weeks since Ultima Lucha aired, less than two months, but due to their pre tape format, it has seemed like much longer since the season wound down.
My best guess is that those in charge of Lucha Underground’s future wanted to gauge fan response during the absence to see if it was worth pursuing future seasons. Clearly, the fans have spoken, but it seems some of the most vocal fans were within. As I’ve mentioned before, Matt Striker and Vampiro haven’t been shy about expressing their love of Lucha Underground and how much they miss it, Matt Cross (aka Son Of Havoc) has also been vocal on social media regarding how much he has loved his time in the Temple.
With a cast and crew that’s so happy with the show and enjoys working so much, with a rabid fan base that seemingly can’t get enough of the product, and with a product itself, that has been a breath of fresh air, something new and different, it is a no-brainer that Lucha Underground would get a second season. The El Rey Network, Chris DeJoseph and everyone involved started something amazing, an alternative to the everyday. Adding more of an episodic TV element to the usual proceedings of a professional wrestling show. It proved to be lightening in a bottle and come 2016, lightening will strike twice.
