David De Gea has signed a new four-year deal at Manchester United, it has emerged.
The Spanish international, who’s contract was set to expire this summer, has the option of a further year.
De Gea was on the brink of joining Spanish giants Real Madrid last week, but the deal collapsed due to the relevant paper work not going through in time.
United boss Louis van Gaal, who has made no secret of his desire to keep United’s number one goalkeeper on the books at Old Trafford this summer, was delighted to have secured De Gea’s services for the foreseeable future. “I am very pleased that he will be part of the team for many years to come. David made a very important contribution to our performance last season and he has been the club’s player of the year for the last two seasons.”
The goalkeeper too expressed his delight at his new deal, adding, “I have always enjoyed playing with these great players in front of our fantastic fans. Manchester United is a special club and Old Trafford is an ideal place for me to continue to develop my career.”
This development represents a largely surprising turn of events, with the shot-stopper seemingly all set for a move to Madrid on transfer deadline day.
Both Real Madrid and Manchester United have released statements following the botched transfer, blaming each other for failing to get the deal over the line.
However, reports on Thursday suggested that De Gea was considering a U-turn on his United future, after his agent Jorge Mendes was spotted at the club’s training complex for contract negotiations.
De Gea, who has yet to feature for the Red Devils this season, is back in contention and could be called upon for tomorrow’s crucial Premier League tie against archrivals Liverpool.
