Mark Giordano Signs Six-Year/$40.5 Million Extension

The Flames have locked up a key piece on their blueline moving forward Tuesday afternoon.

Giordano, who will turn 32 this October, has had quite a path to the NHL. Undrafted in 2004, the Flames signed him to a contract then assigned him to the AHL for the better part of two seasons after playing in the OHL for the previous two campaigns with the Owen Sound Attack. He topped out at 58 points for the Flames’ AHL affiliate, the Lowell Lock Monsters, in his second AHL season in 2005-06. He played seven games for the Flames that season recording an assist.

In 2006-07, Giordano played 48 games for the big club, totaling seven goals and 15 points. The following offseason saw the then-22-year old split from the Flames wanting to play in a higher caliber league than the AHL(it was unsure that he would be a regular in the NHL at that point), as he signed with HC Dynamo Moscow in Russia.

He returned to the Flames after a four-goal, 15 point season in the Russian Super League and has remained on the NHL blueline ever since 2008-09, totaling 66 goals and 245 points in 510 NHL games. He has had recent success however, that has seen his name hover around Norris Trophy consideration.

In his last 125 games played Giordano has scored 25 goals and 95 points, and was a strong candidate this season with 11 goals and 48 points through 61 games but unfortunately had a season-ending operation on a torn biceps tendon.
