Sports. Honestly. Since 2011

Honoring Buddy Baker, 1941-2015

As reported by Sirius XM NASCAR early this morning, legendary driver and broadcaster Buddy Baker passed away at age 74 from lung cancer. Baker, a Hall of Fame inductee, is remembered for his nonstop style of racing that allowed him to garner nineteen victories. The Gentle Giant won at many of the big tracks, including Charlotte, Darlington, and Talladega. Today, NASCAR and all of motorsports is honoring Buddy Baker.

Buddy Baker grew up as the son of NASCAR Hall of Famer Buck Baker, and would not stop giving back to the sport he loved after he stopped driving. Baker would transition into the world of broadcasting on CBS Sports and The Nashville Network (TNN). Working with great broadcasters like Dick Berggren, Mike Joy, and Bob Dillner, Baker captured the aura of NASCAR racing and brought in more casual fans to become strong supporters of the sport. Baker also lent his voice to other series including the ASA.

In what would end up being Baker’s final stop would be his stint with Sirius XM Radio, hosting “Late Shift” with Brad Gillie and “Tradin Paint” with Jim Noble. Baker resigned nearly a month ago from these roles due to his inoperable cancer tumor in his lung, but upon leaving the air, he told his followers to “not shed a tear…give me a smile when you hear my name.”

Today, NASCAR is smiling for Buddy Baker. A great driver, broadcaster, and friend to all who know the sport well, Baker will not be forgotten by those who truly knew the gentle giant.
