Manchester United Agree Deal for Bastian Schweinsteiger
Manchester United and Bayern Munich have agreed on a deal for German captain Bastian Schweinsteiger. Karl.l-Heinz Rummenigge, Bayern Munich’s chief executive, confirmed Bastian Schweinsteiger will join Manchester United after both parties agreed on a deal
The 30-year-old is rumoured to have turned down a new contract that was offered to him stay at Bayern Munich. The German club tried to convince him to stay but the midfielder had his mind set on a new challenge. The exact fee involved has not been disclosed yet but it is believed Manchester United will pay about £15m for the midfielder.
Rummenigge said: ‘Bastian wants to do something new at the end of his career. He asked that we meet his wishes.
‘My colleagues at Manchester United have been in touch. We have reached an agreement over the transfer.
“It’s regrettable because Bastian meant a great deal to the club. He has achieved great things.
‘We say goodbye on great terms.’
Bayern Munich’s chief executive went on to say the doors are open to Schweinsteiger should he want to return to the club at the end of his career and he would receive a testimonial match.
Also on social media Manchester United confirmed the signing of the German captain via the club’s official twitter account. A club statement said: “Manchester United are delighted to announce they have reached an agreement with Bayern Munich to sign midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, subject to a medical and personal terms.”
Louis van Gaal, who managed Schweinsteiger at Bayern Munich for three seasons, will reunite with the player he introduced to the central midfield role. The versatile midfield man made 500 appearances for Bayern Munich and scored 67 goals in his 17 years at club. Schweinsteiger has helped the German outfit win eight Bundesliga titles, seven German Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup and a UEFA Champions League.
The deal is reported to be a three year contract worth £7.2m-a-year. He is expected to travel to Manchester for his medicals before the deal is confirmed finally.
