Lucha Crítica: Lucha Underground Week of June 24

Welcome to the Lucha Crítica, where I look at this week’s Lucha Underground. Find out what happened, who had the edge, and what the main event for Ultima Lucha will be.

SEXY STAR VS. SUPER FLY

Prior to the match getting underway, we saw a sit down interview with Vampiro speaking to Super Fly. It involved the usual questions, “Why attack Sexy Star?” etc. The short answer was, because she took his mask. A pretty typical promo from a freshly turned heel.

The match itself was also fairly typical, the first half wasn’t bad, but nothing to write home about. The action spilled outside the ring and that was when the pace quickened. Sexy Star took control and didn’t let up against her former friend, until Super Fly got a quick kick in, followed by a double powerbomb which Sexy couldn’t get up from.

Edge: The edge has to go to Super Fly here as he needed the win desperately after returning a couple weeks ago. It’s a rough spot for Sexy to be in however, after the loss to Pentagon  Jr a couple weeks ago, followed by a loss here, Sexy Star has some climbing to do to get up the ladder of competition.

FIVE WAY MATCH
WINNER RECEIVES GOLDEN MEDALLION

Pentagon Jr. was the first to come out to the ring, quickly tearing the mic from Melissa Santos’ hands. Pentagon talked about how he wasn’t interested in winning a golden medallion, what he really wanted was to get revenge on the man who took away his greatest sacrifice to his master. That man was Vampiro.

After a brief face to face, it was the referee who broke them up, much to the dismay of the believers. This was one of those moments where the crowd reaction played almost as big of a role as the luchadors themselves, with the audience building the tension. After the ref split the two apart Pentagon walked away to the back and Vampiro reclaimed his position at the commentary table, visibly frustrated.

FOUR WAY MATCH
WINNER RECEIVES A GOLDEN MEDALLION
AERO STAR VS. MARTY “THE MOTH” VS. CAGE VS. THE MACK

This was an interesting match, on the surface it looked like Cage would dominate since he has been the biggest star of the four in Lucha Underground, and dominate he did, but only for so long. The Mack, a guy who has never ceased to impress me with what he can do for a guy his size, was more than willing to stand toe to toe with the Machine. The two clashed multiple times during the match, but it was a T-Bone suplex delivered by Mack onto the ring apron that took Cage out of the match, and just looked awesome. Mack followed it up with a frog splash from the second rope to the floor, effectively taking both men out of the match leaving the rookie Marty as easy pickings for the man from the cosmos, Aero Star, becoming the third luchador to receive a medallion, after Fenix and Jack Evans.

Edge: A tough one to call, Cage was very dominant, The Mack was very impressive with his innovative offence and Aero Star was the one who won the match, so who had the edge? In the match it was Cage. Although he didn’t come out of the match with a victory, he spent more time on offence than defence. Moving forward I think Cage could have an easier time getting back into the Lucha Underground Championship landscape than the other three.

TRAINING TO DEATH

The first backstage segment of the episode showed the Trios Champions training in the locker room, Angelica stretching while Son Of Havoc and Ivelisse were boxing. The training session was interrupted however, by the mistress of Muertes herself Catrina. She explained to the champions that sooner or later death comes for everything as the Disciples of Death appeared behind the champions, laying each one out, leaving Catrina to walk effortlessly hand in hand with Mil Muertes.

LUCHA UNDERGROUND MAIN EVENT
WINNER RECEIVES TITLE MATCH AT ULTIMA LUCHA
DRAGO VS. MIL MUERTES

Before the match even got started Hernandez rushed the ring and started beating down Drago, whipping him with his belt and choking him with it. Add to that a match with the undead luchador and things were looking bleak for Drago.

It was Drago’s never back down attitude vs. the unstoppable Mil Muertes, something had to give and unfortunately for Drago, it may have been him. It was a hard hitting match that saw Muertes control most of it, due in no small part to his throwing Drago into a section of wooden chairs, and then obliterating one of the seats over Drago.

Despite the beating he took outside the ring, Drago managed to mount a bit of a comeback hitting some kicks a tornado DDT, and attempting the Dragon’s Whip which Mil countered, a feat not yet seen in Lucha Underground. In the end Drago would share the same fate as many and fall victim to the flatliner.

Edge: Mil Muertes, the man has been on fire since returning and looks to be unstoppable, carving a path through the roster.

After the match Prince Puma and Konnan showed up at the top of the steps, with Matt Striker putting the matchup into words, “Many have called the Lucha Underground Champion Prince Puma ‘death defying’ come Ultima Lucha Puma may have to do just that as the man of 1000 deaths is coming for the Aztec gold.”

Until next week, keep your mask on!
