BROTHERLY DISCUSSION
This week’s show opened with Dario Cueto talking to his brother, who is locked in a cage, about seven medallions belonging to each of the ancient Aztec tribes. Apparently, when these medallions are united, they will make “one warrior as powerful as the Gods themselves”. I’m not sure what to make of this, all I could think of was how this scene reminded me of The Goonies. Mysterious medallions, a monster of a man locked away; if Dario’s brother shows up in a Superman shirt I’m sold.
AERO STAR VS. JACK EVANS
The opening contest saw the Lucha Underground of Jack Evans. Plucked from AAA, as many of the Lucha Underground roster have been, Evans is a road warrior who has travelled the world and graced the squared circle in Ring of Honor, TNA and Dragon Gate. Evans was in for a fight with the hungry Aero Star. This is the first time fans had seen the man who calls The Cosmos home since he lost the best of five series against Drago, he had something to prove, but so did Evans, and neither man disappointed.
Both men spent the early part of the match evading each other with various flips, the ever cocky Evans made sure the fans knew how good he was, never ceasing to exclaim “I am Lucha Libre!” Aero Star’s experience proved to be an asset but an injury to his knee during the match made it a hard mountain to climb. Jack capitalized and after hitting Aero Star with a 450 splash on the outside, I was sure it was over. However, Aero Star proved why he was able to go the distance with Drago and why he should never be underestimated, hitting Evans with a top rope flipping pile driver that was nothing short of devastating. The look on Jack Evans’ face as he was pinned to the mat said it all.
Edge: I was fully prepared to give the edge to Evans throughout much of this match. He proved that he will be a force in Lucha Underground. He’s one of the cockiest luchadores to set foot in the Temple, but he does have the skills to back it up. That being said, Aero Star needed a win here. He had a great showing in the series with Drago, but coming up short was a big setback, but possibly a blessing since Drago is no longer part of Lucha Underground. For the determination in this match, and for getting a much-needed win, Aero Star has the edge, but can he keep it up?
FAMILY VALUES
Since The Crew turned on Big Ryck several months ago, he has been cheered and viewed as a babyface, but it would seem old habits are hard to break. While backstage counting his money, Ryck had a few choice words for his cousin The Mack. Mack just happened to ask where he got the money, which Ryck didn’t really answer. He merely said that the almighty dollar was what was most important and for the right price, he would even beat down a member of his own family. I have been impressed with The Mack since his debut in Lucha Underground, and if he and Big Ryck were to come to blows, it’s a match I’d love to see.
CAGE VS. KING CUERNO VS. SEXY STAR VS. PENTAGON JR. VS. FENIX VS. THE MACK VS. KILL SHOT (Winner receives one of the seven medallions)
Before the match got underway, Dario Cueto emerged from his office to announce that the winner of the match would receive one of the seven mysterious medallions that he spoke about at the top of the show. While virtually nothing is known about these medallions, if El Jefe sees value in them, then they are a prize worth fighting for.
Controlled chaos is the best way to describe this match. It’s easy for luchadores to get lost in the shuffle in a match like this but for the most part everyone not only held their own, but had a chance to shine. Sexy Star is one of the only participants who seemed a little out of her depth, although the fact that she went after the much, much larger Cage may have been a contributing factor. She also let her personal hatred toward Pentagon Jr. cloud her judgment in the match. Speaking of the Machine, Cage was dominant any time he was in the ring and his alliance with King Cuerno was a definite advantage. Both men attempted double covers several times in the match, not once trying to break up each other’s pin attempt. I really like them as a team. King Cuerno was actually my pick to win this match, and he put forth a fantastic effort, but with this many bodies in a single fall match, it’s easy to let victory slip from one’s grasp. In the end, it was Fenix once again rising to the occasion.
Edge: Fenix. Still riding high from his Grave Consequences win over Mil Muertes, Fenix seems unstoppable as he soars higher and higher up the Lucha Underground ladder.
CLIMB THE LADDER TO SUCCESS
Dario Cueto sat down with the Lucha Underground Trios Champions, Angelico, Ivelisse, and Son of Havoc to tell them yet again how surprised he was that they not only functioned as a team, but managed to win the Trios Championships. He also informed them that next week The Crew will have a title match against the unlikely trio in a ladder match. Like any devious boss, Cueto didn’t seem to care that Ivelisse’s leg is still in a cast either.
I SEE DEAD PEOPLE
Don’t you hate it when you are trying to unwind in the locker room and you start seeing things? I’m sure Fenix does. He was informed by Catrina that he was nothing more than a pawn, that she and Mil Muertes used Fenix to gain his power, and that Mil would be coming for the man of a thousand lives. As Fenix tried to confront her, Catrina disappeared, leaving Fenix to think about the onslaught that is to come, looking up to see three mysterious luchadores wearing death skull masks moving and contorting above him. We saw last week that Mil Muertes had returned, and it seems he plans to settle some unfinished business.
LUCHA UNDERGROUND MAIN EVENT
ALBERTO EL PATRON VS. HERNANDEZ – NO DISQUALIFICATION OR NO COUNT OUT TO DETERMINE #1 CONTENDER
This match started off being exactly what one would expect, Hernandez used his strength while El Patron used his quickness and finesse. However, the match would take an unexpected turn as Alberto looked to finish Hernandez off. The AAA Mega Champion was calling for his patented cross armbar submission when from out of nowhere Johnny Mundo pulled El Patron out of the ring and began beating him down before doing his best Shawn Michaels impression and throwing Albert through the window of Dario Cueto’s office. Referee Marty Elias didn’t seem to know what to do until finally Mundo threw El Patron back in the ring where a stunned Hernandez covered the bloody AAA Champion for the victory.
Edge: Johnny Mundo. For the first time in Lucha Underground he was on the receiving end of a sea of boos, and deservedly so. He threw one of the most loved luchadores in the Temple through a window. Success often comes at a cost, and for Johnny Mundo that cost may simply be the love of the fans. If it is a price he is willing to pay, then this may have been the smartest move he could make.
