A new tradition at iconic Wrigley Field in Chicago appears to have been created last Saturday. During the San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs game Saturday, Krista Dotzenrod caught a foul ball with her beer filled cup. With her beer foaming and overflowing, Dotzenrod proceeded to hold the cup up and then chug the remaining beer in the cup – with the baseball still in it.
Chugball: Wrigley Field’s New Baseball Tradition
The crowd around Dotzenrod cheered as if the Cubs had won the World Series. Dotzenrod posted a photo of the ball in the now drained cup on Instagram. The video of the event went viral and seems to have started a new tradition of Chugball at the iconic ball park. #Chugball has become the new trending Twitter hashtag.
While Dotzenrod fields all of her media outlet offers during her 15 minutes of fame, other fans are following her example. In the Cubs game the next day against the St. Louis Cardinals, another Cubs fan caught a foul ball with his beer-laden cup and chugged all of the remaining beer.
Cardinals’ Fans Don’t Get it
Cubs fans are saying if you catch a foul ball in any manner, plunk it in your beer and chug. Geoff Ziezulewicz at the Chicago Tribune reported that on Sunday a Cardinals fan also caught a foul ball with his cup of beer, but poured out the beer and pulled the ball out. Like throwing a home run ball hit by an opposing team back onto the field, Cubs fans do not expect Cardinal fans to figure out how to engage in the Chugball tradition properly.
It is an exciting season at Wrigley already with new manager Joe Maddon, the newly signed ace pitcher Jon Lester, the play of young Cubs Jorge Soler and Anthony Rizzo, Starlin Castro, and even the promotion of phenom Kris Bryant to the majors. Chugball can only help enhance the Wrigley Field experience. This will be a year that Cubs fans will always remember for creation of the Chugball tradition. Thank you, Krista Dotzenrod.
