Manor finally got their wheels on and the power units running at the heat of Malaysia. Whilst it was clear that the 107% rule was going to be the team’s only rival this weekend, it was a pleasant surprise to see the cars running at the very least. Whilst only one managed to start the race, there was definitely a positive to take as the one that started the race also managed to finish it.

No. 28 Will Stevens (GBR)

Stevens set a pretty solid lap which was well inside the 107% time on Friday practice which essentially saved the team’s weekend. A fuel issue side-lined him on Saturday for qualifying and with no parts able to be found; it also side-lined him for the race as well. A frustrating weekend I am sure, but there was at least one positive to be found as he did manage to get out on track for the first time since Abu Dhabi last season.
No. 98 Roberto Merhi (SPA)
Grid: P19
Race: P15
Unlike Stevens, Merhi was unable to set a time within the 107% at any point during the weekend. Despite this (I am assuming due to Stevens’ lap) he was able to start the race. Indeed, Merhi was lapping five seconds off the pace, but he was doing it consistently so it was a really solid debut for the Spaniard. He brought the car home and kept out of trouble after his spins on Friday, which must definitely be a boost to the team.
With McLaren finding pace rapidly, it may well be tricky for the Manor guys to keep up with anybody bar themselves for this season with their underpowered Ferrari V8, but at least the team have got up and running.
