The Detroit Pistons have received the bad news they just didn’t want, as one of their most productive player’s Brandon Jennings, will miss the rest of the season. The point guard suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in his left leg, during Saturday’s loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. This is definitely bad news for the Pistons as Jennings has been averaging 15.4 PPG and 6.6 Assists per game. Jennings is clearly an important player for Detroit, he will be missed.
The injury will have Brandon Jennings off the court for six to nine months. Coach Stan Van Gundy will most likely look to backup point guard D.J. Augustin to fill in for the injured Jennings. The loss of Jennings makes what has been a below average season only worse, as the Pistons currently stand at 17 and 28.
Coach Stan Van Gundy had this to say about losing Jennings for the rest of the season. “He plays all summer, he loves being in the gym, on top of that, he was having the best season of his career, particularly lately, so it’s really tough. It’s tough for us but it’s even tougher for him because he was playing so well and then to have it end when he was on such a run is really unfortunate.”
Coach Van Gundy clearly feels for Jennings and it’s never good to see players go down with such injuries. Jennings’ season is sadly over but the Piston’s season is not. While the Pistons had a terrible start winning just five games in the first two months, they recently went on a seven game win streak fuelling hopes of them getting back into the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference.
Given the latest injury, it will be extremely difficult for the Pistons to make the Playoffs this year, but they will give it a good go down the stretch. They are a good young team, led by athletic center Andre Drummond. They also have a great coach in Stan Van Gundy. I think he will deal with the Jennings situation like any veteran coach would, with the attitude of next man up. D.J. Augustin is Jennings replacement and the Pistons will need him to play well to have a solid finish to the season.
