AFCON 2015 Group A favourites Burkina Faso shocked by Aubameyang’s Gabon
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was on target as Gabon toppled Burkina Faso on the opening day of AFCON15 in Equatorial Guinea.
Gabon and Borussia Dortmund man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring in the 19th minute. He showed composure in the penalty area to get his first goal of the tournament.
Burkina Faso posed most of the threat, but Gabon goalkeeper Didier Ovono was not going to be beaten on the day, pulling off some astonishing saves. He denied Bertrand Traore in both halves of the game.
Jonathan Pitroipa- top scorer in qualifier scuffed a shot into the hands of the opponent’s keeper after a beautiful swift passing game from Burkina Faso on the 30th minute.
Pitroipa again fired a shot straight into Ovono again, as it was the keeper who was having the better of the striker.
After a first half full of pace, the second half saw a drop in the tempo of the game.
It was end-to-end stuff as both goalkeepers were required to make reflex saves in the 65th minute
In the 72nd minute Gabon doubled their lead through Evouna’s brilliant header. Frederic Bulot showed some great piece of skill before sending in a cross for Evouna.
Pitroipa once again tried to pull a goal back but saw his shot blocked.
After the final whistle Gabon were on top of Group A following the draw between the host Equatorial Guinea and Congo earlier.
