Report: Belgium’s Junior Malanda passes away at 20

Young Belgian footballer, Junior Malanda, was involved in a car accident on Saturday where he passed away immediately. Reports say he was sitting in the backseat of an SUV when it was involved in a collision and ended the life of the Wolfsburg midfielder.

Various reports, including the magazine BILD, broke the tragic news of the passing of the young defensive midfielder. Junior Malanda was plying his trade at VFL Wolfsburg in Bundesliga at the time. He was a strong midfielder with a bright future in European football.

He spent the 2013/2014 season on loan at SV Zulte Varegem in the Belgian Pro League, and only just returned to Wolfsburg for the 2014-2015 season. He made 15 appearances for Wolfsburg, netting twice in total.

The 20-year old spent parts of his career at Crystal Palace, Lille, Brussels, and Anderlecht as well. He had played as part of the youth Belgian international teams ever since the U15 level and was poised to make the step to the international side in the foreseeable future.

Teammate Kevin De Bruyne shared the news on his Instagram account, quoting, “So strange to hear your friend in the morning and then this news. Lost a great friend way to early. Rest in peace my friend. You will always be around.”

News of the talented footballers’ passing will send shockwaves across Europe and Belgian footballer, who will lose a talented young man and a potentially elite player.
