On Sunday, Manchester United overcame their arch rivals Liverpool 3-0, it marked United’s sixth premier league victory in a row and they are currently the only team in the league to have done that so far. Sunday’s game produced a result for the fans but not, however, an enjoyable performance. This can all change after the game against Paul Lambert’s out of form Aston Villa side and a big performance could be a huge boost to a United side that despite picking up the points are playing far below the expected standard.
For the fans, beating Liverpool is always one of the highlights of the season, nearly every United fan loves getting one over on their long-term enemies. So, with that in mind one would think that fans would be over joyed but there was a real underwhelming feeling left behind after the events at Old Trafford. Despite netting three goals, for large portions of the game Manchester United were outplayed, and only an incredible display by David De Gea was the reason for the final scoreline. At the other end of the pitch United have been incredibly clinical, in the last two games United have scored five goals from eight shots on target. Where United have struggled to create chances, the flawless finishing has become paramount to their current success.
Where United may have struggled in recent games should be less of a problem and this should allow the Red Devils the freedom to regain the creative form that recently have been lacking. Aston Villa have plenty of issues of their own as it is, without even taking into consideration the threadbare squad that is currently missing eight big name players through injuries, including Joe Cole, Kieran Richardson and Manchester United loanee Tom Cleverly.
Manchester United vs Aston Villa will be an interesting contest. Villa will almost certainly be fielding a second rate team and this gives United the opportunity to capitalise on their poor run of form, to try to improve on their football before the start of the busy festive period. But more importantly United need to secure another win to continue this incredible run and cement a festive top four position.
