Four Things Jurgen Klopp Is Doing to Save Liverpool’s Season

Liverpool are not having the best of starts to the current Premier League season, but there are four things Jurgen Klopp is doing to ensure that the Reds’ are still title-worthy. It showed in their Champions League clash against Ajax, and this brand of football will be dangerous in the Premier League. The evident absence of Sadio Mane is explicitly visible to every fan, but the fixes are coming.

Joel Matip was the hero for Liverpool as the defender rose to the occasion to give the Reds their opening points in the Champions League. With the match going down to the wire, the 89th-minute header from Matip got the side a 2-1 victory.

The Reds were worthy of the win but couldn’t break the Dutch defence. Salah was back on the scoring sheet but wasn’t quite at his full potential.

But, fans with Liverpool tickets at the Kop were delighted to see the changes brought in and their style of play changing, giving an indication that hope is not lost.

Four Things Jurgen Klopp is Doing to Ignite Liverpool’s Season

Diego Jota Return

Jota was Liverpool’s weapon of choice last season and has delivered as an x-factor player on many occasions. The experiment with Darwin Nunez doesn’t seem to be working, as the new signing is taking a little time to adjust to Liverpool’s game plan.

On a night where Liverpool needed to discover their A-game, it was no brainer to see Klopp opting for Diogo Jota ahead of Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino. This was a sign of one of the four things Jurgen Klopp is working on to get Liverpool firing in all competitions.

Jota delivered from the front, setting the game’s tone. It seemed that Liverpool’s missing piece was Jota, and while the Nunez tries to get himself up to pace, Klopp will go for his trusted option of Jota in the Premier League.

He was excellent against Ajax, as he buzzed around on and off the ball in the opening phases, linking up brilliantly with Salah and Luis Diaz.

Calmness in the Middle

Thiago Alcantara was the player that brought a sense of calmness to the Liverpool side after a prolonged period of restlessness. The Naples loss was a hard pill to swallow for the fans who had Liverpool tickets for the game, and it was an obvious call to bring Thiago to the side.

With the likes of Matip, Thiago brought in better ball control, and at a time when Liverpool was trying to get better in this aspect, it was the right move.

Thiago was superb in the first half, and Liverpool felt like they were a much better side with him. While the Spaniard is quite injury-prone, the Reds need to use him at all possible levels to improve their gameplay.

The Darwin Nunez Drama

Filling Sadio Mane’s shoes was always a challenge. Liverpool brought in Darwin Nunez at a considerable sum, and it felt like it was still taking time. Even when Liverpool bulldozed Bournemouth 9-0, Nunez wasn’t the centre of attention. It was only when he was subbed that Salah returned to his playing rhythm.

In truth, Nunez’s start at Liverpool was disrupted by the red card he encountered in the game against Crystal Palace. It followed a three-match ban, and as a result, he only has started for the Reds twice.

He has neither scored nor assisted in the Premier League during his short stint. Such a stat should not be a massive concern right now, with only six games to his Liverpool career. After all, players take time to adapt to Jurgen Klopp’s style of play.

The likes of Fabhinho and Andy Robertson are prime examples of where the duo took a considerable time to blend in. But with a league title to win, Nunez might need to fast-track his adoption.

But the concerning sign was the mishaps in communication where Nunez wasn’t entirely involved in the team’s style. He was more often running without clear direction and not communicating too often.

This could change in the next few games.

It should not be overlooked that when Mane joined Liverpool, the side was rebuilding, and there was ample room for trial and error. In 2022, Liverpool is different; they want an established forward who could get going from the very first minute. Not to forget that Mane already had two years of Premier League experience under his belt when he joined Liverpool.

In contrast, Nunez is a part of a side stung with injuries, hurting after disappointing defeats in the Champions League final and the loss of the Premier League.

Given the rocky start, it is no surprise that it has been suggested that letting go of Mane was a mistake. On top of that, the club did not handle Mane’s farewell well, and a true Liverpool legend did not get the send-off he expected.

Problems in Defence Remain

Dealing with the defensive issues at Anfield is one of four things Jurgen Klopp is doing to get the season back on track.

It was a consoling sight to see Thiago and Joel Matip rising t the occasion, but fans who purchase Liverpool tickets cannot ignore the fact that their defence is falling.

Virgil Van Dijk, Liverpool’s minister of defence, doesn’t seem to be his usual self this season, and that’s a concerning sight for the Liverpool ticket holders. Cancelling the games will help the lads from Anfield prepare better in their defences. In the match against Ajax, where they conceded a goal, it was a sense of déjà vu and a failure to learn from past mistakes.

The concerning signs were also with Alexander-Arnold, where the defender was found wanting. Steven Berghuis drifted behind him to pull the ball back where Kudus was given time to turn and unleash a superb effort which crashed in off Alisson’s crossbar.

The goal had similarities to Jadon Sancho’s opener for Manchester against Liverpool, where the winger received the ball in a box and had ample time to find the net.

Liverpool ultimately got themselves over the line, but the pattern of vulnerability will not have gone unnoticed by their rivals. With no game now until October 1, Klopp will have plenty of time to ponder a better way to solve it.
