CFL Week 9 Power Rankings – Redblacks Take Control of the East

After an exciting weekend highlighted by offence and potential upsets here is where the CFL Power Rankings stand after 9 weeks of action.

CFL Week 9 Power Rankings

1. Calgary Stampeders

The perfect Calgary Stampeders sat out this week and watched their closest competitor take a loss. The Stampeders will look to continue their perfect campaign on Saturday as they travel to Regina to face the Duron Carter-less Saskatchewan Roughriders.

2. Edmonton Eskimos

Despite losing at B.C Place last Thursday, the Edmonton Eskimos remain second place in this week’s power rankings. Mike Reilly had another 300+-yard game and the offence seemed to be ticking at a decent rate, they just couldn’t produce when it mattered. With the Blue Bombers on their tail the Eskimos will need to pick up a win this Saturday at Commonwealth facing Johnny Football and the Montreal Alouettes.

3. Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Andrew Harris and the Blue Bombers picked up their third consecutive win last Friday hosting the Tiger-Cats. Despite not producing a whole lot offensively, this Winnipeg team continues to find ways to win. The Bombers defence produced two forced fumbles, recovering both, and racked up four sacks as well as producing a safety. Winnipeg will take on the East Division-leading Ottawa Redblacks next week at Investors Group Field.

4. Ottawa Redblacks

After a troubling loss to the Argonauts at BMO Field, Redblacks fans were surely biting their nails this week after a near upset to the Montreal Alouettes. The Redblacks produced 601 yards of total offence, 330 yards more than Montreal. And yet it took a last-minute touchdown to edge the Als and stay atop the East Division. Despite their inconsistencies, this Redblacks team finds themselves at 5-3 with some very promising talent on their offence and special teams. They will face a much taller task this Friday as they head to Winnipeg to try snap the Blue Bombers three-game winning streak.

5. B.C Lions

Things looked as though they were going from bad to worse for the Lions before this week losing Brandon Rutley and then Jeremiah Johnson, again. But, they still had Travon Van. In his first game starting for the Lions Van managed to produce 143 all-purpose yards. He also scored what would end up being the game-winning points early in the fourth quarter on an eight-yard touchdown scamper. The Lions will look to go back to .500 and keep pace in the West Division playoff race as they travel to BMO Field to face the Argonauts this Saturday.

6. Saskatchewan Roughriders

After a tough road loss to the Eskimos the Roughriders and Chris Jones made the decision to cut Duron Carter after he caught a touchdown the week previous. It was a curious decision by the Roughriders but not one they can dwell. Saskatchewan has to focus on their matchup with the undefeated Calgary Stampeders this Saturday as they will face them without one their best players.

7. Hamilton Tiger-Cats

After a solid bounce-back game against the Alouettes, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats found themselves in the loss column yet again this time at the hands of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in a game where simply, the better team won. Jeremiah Masoli was completing passes at just a 63% clip but did manage to not throw any interceptions. With Alex Green proving to be far more effective than John White, and Luke Tasker returning from injury, it seems as though this Tiger-Cats offence has all the tools for success, they just can’t seem to click as a unit.

8. Toronto Argonauts

McLeod Bethel-Thompson and the Toronto Argonauts had this week to reflect on their amazing comeback win and also plan on how to turn their season around. They are just two points behind the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. They will host the B.C Lions this week in what will surely be considered a must-win game for the Argonauts.

9. Montreal Alouettes

After a 39 point shellacking at the hands of Jeremiah Masoli and the Ti-Cats things were better this week for Johnny Manziel and the Alouettes. The Alouettes went into the 4th quarter with a six-point lead almost all thanks for their defence. Although they eventually did end up losing there are a few positives for this team to take away. Johnny Manziel did not throw an interception. Despite fumbling the ball three times, only one was lost. Manziel’s quest for his first CFL win will continue next week in Edmonton in what unfortunately already looks like a foregone conclusion.
