QB1 is back in Des Moines.
Drew Powell, the Barnstormer quarterback who left the team for a brief, three-week stint is now back in Iowa after not being picked up by the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League (CFL).
Iowa Barnstormer’s Drew Powell returns from Saskatchewan
Powell had took a hiatus from the team to tryout in a mini-camp in Saskatchewan, and hasn’t played in a Barnstormers game since their 43-32 loss to Nebraska on March 30.
“We’ve got to get him going,” Wooten said. “We have to see where he is and go from there.”
Powell started the first five games of the season for the Barnstormers, throwing for 691 yards, 14 touchdowns, and leading the team to a 3-2 start.
Rohach has started the two games since Powell left, leading Iowa to two commanding wins over both Nebraska and Green Bay.
With both quarterbacks back in his arsenal, Wooten wouldn’t shed light on who would get the starting job from here on out.
“Most definitely [it’s a quarterback battle],” Wooten said. “[Powell] left for the next level and [Rohach] is playing real good.”
Wooten said that the better quarterback this week in practice would get the start this Saturday, when the team faces the seemingly unbeatable Sioux Falls Storm.
“We’ve got to go to the film and see who can give us a better shot at beating Sioux Falls,” Wooten said.
Iowa and Sioux Falls will meet for the second time this season on Saturday. In the first meeting, Iowa was downed 52-40 at Wells Fargo Arena.
Saturday’s game at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls will kick off at 7:05 p.m. CT and will be live streamed all around the nation on YouTube. For more Indoor Football coverage from Last Word on Sports, follow our department’s official twitter page at @LWOS_IndoorFB.
