England’s U20 Success is Down to the Coaching, Says Josh Bayliss

From Last Word on Rugby, Aaron Tillyer

England U20 back row Josh Bayliss believes the coaching set-up is key to its incredible success at age-grade level.

Bayliss, who plys his trade at Premiership club Bath, has been pivotal during England’s U20 campaign.

But the prospect of a fourth title in five years, Bayliss believes, has to be accredited to England’s coaches.

“The coaches are top class. We’ve got five or six coaches here who are at the top of their game” said Bayliss.

“The whole system and structure are all provided and put in place.

“They always have positive input and all want you to be the best player you can be.”

Bayliss added “The support staff, the media guys, the strength and conditioning guys – it massively helps.

“It’s a really great atmosphere they create. It’s always learning, always having fun.

“It drives the team to want to play around them.”

Superior in defence

The back-rower has been solid in England’s defensive line during the World Championship. The 19-year old is the side’s top tackler with nineteen and will be called upon against Australia on Thursday.

“It’s something I’ve been working on this season. In the past it’s been an area where I’ve wanted to improve.

“There’s loads of gains to be made and there’s lots of things I’m still working on.

“But I’m happy with where it’s at at the moment.”

England will face Australia in the final pool game on Thursday. A win for the defending champions will see them progress to the semi-finals.

England defeated Samoa 74-17 in their opening fixture. A measured 34-22 win against Wales secured their second bonus point of the campaign.

In doing so, England currently top Pool A with ten points, with Australia just behind on 9.

Australia and New Zealand are the only teams, alongside England, who are unbeaten after round two.

England defeated Australia in last year’s pool stage and will go into the tie as favourites.
