Week 2 of the 2017 Arena Football League seasons is officially over. This can only mean it’s time for Last Word on Sports’ Arena Football League Week 2 takeaways.

Arena Football League Week 2 Takeaways

The Need for Nelson is Now

The Cleveland Gladiators have started two quarterbacks in their first two games. Shane Boyd started in their Week 1 loss against the Tampa Bay Storm. Tanner Marsh started in their loss against the Baltimore Brigade.

The team’s quarterback from last season, Arvell Nelson, was cut after just one week of training camp this past off-season. Since then, they’ve brought him back, but as a jack linebacker. Cleveland currently sits at an 0-2 record. If they want to get back to their winning ways, Nelson may be the answer.

Last season, Nelson threw for 3,425 yards and 70 touchdowns and led the Glads to the conference title game. At 0-2, they need to start him at quarterback to get them out of the hole they’re in.

Soul Still Soaring

The Philadelphia Soul won their first game of the 2017 season over a good Tampa Bay Storm team. In the win, quarterback Dan Raudabaugh threw for 257 yards and five touchdowns.

The defense also shined against the offensive of Randy Hippeard and Joe Hills. James Romain had several pass deflections and an interception. New Soul teammate Torez Jones recorded an interception which he returned for two points on a Storm failed two-point conversion attempt.

Philadelphia hasn’t lost a touch since last season. The road to a repeat isn’t easy, but they have the team talent to make it happen.

Captain Carden the Cardiac Kid

Shane Carden started for the Baltimore Brigade in Week 2 against the Cleveland Gladiators. The AFL rookie threw for 159 yards and six touchdowns. The Brigade won their first game in franchise history much in part to Carden’s performance.

This comes after Chase Cartwright started the first game against the Washington Valor. Baltimore found themselves down 34-6 at half. When Carden took over, the Brigade outscored Washington 38-24 in the second half. Carden has shown the last two weeks that he is indeed the right man to lead the expansion franchise the rest of the way.
