Dodge City Law Going Back to the Drawing Board for 2017
In 2016, the Dodge City Law made the playoffs, but suffered a 98-56 first round defeat against the Amarillo Venom.
However, the roster that got them there has gone through a complete overhaul before the start of the 2017 season. The team will have to find replacements, and lots of them.
It starts with a dual-threat quarterback in Derrick Bernard. He was second in the Champions Indoor Football League with 3,006 total yards. Bernard also led the league in both passing and rushing.
Then add Dominique Carson, a running back who rushed for 555 yards and 22 touchdowns. He finished third in the CIF in rushing behind Chicago’s Calvin Phillips and Bernard.
Finally, DeWayne Autbrey, who was one tackle away from leading the league in that category. He also lead the team in interceptions.
All of them are gone.
Whether they departed for bigger things, or left for a different team, the Law will have to find replacements for each.
Laying Down the Law
To this point, the team has taken an NFL approach to things, having signed seven players who have worked out at NFL camps.
The experienced group is lead by Daniel McKinney. He led last season’s team with 714 receiving yards, while hauling in 21 touchdowns.
The Law have signed two new quarterbacks. One is a pocket passer in Rudy Johnson (Winston-Salem State). The other is TeeJay Gordon (College of Idaho), who is a proven dual threat.
Since CIF team training camps won’t start for some time, there really is no way of knowing where the Law will turn for the quarterback spot.
The only thing that is “for sure,” for Dodge City is that the 2017 group will be much different than 2016’s.
The Law will open the 2017 season against the Duke City Gladiators on March 4 at the United Wireless Arena.
