Greig Laidlaw Transfer to Clermont in 2017

Scotland v France - RBS Six Nations

Last Word On Rugby, by Josh Bradham.

Scottish Captain Greig Laidlaw transfer to Clermont for three year deal at the end of the 2016/2017 season.

According to L’Equipe:

“As revealed on our website in the month of May, Clermont had moved onto Greig Laidlaw early. Reportedly; the Scottish scrum half (age 30, 51 caps), out of contract with Gloucester in June 2017, agreed to ASM for the next three seasons. A source confirmed that Laidlaw has informed his current club he will leave at the end of the season.”(Translated from French)

This development has since been confirmed by Clermont rugby.

This development will be a blow to Gloucester, who promoted Laidlaw to co-captain prior to the start of this season. His kicking abilities have kept Gloucester relevant in many games that they have played in so far this year. Glouchester has come to fully rely on Laidlaw for his outstanding game management, leadership and kicking abilities. They will certainly be scrambling throughout the duration of the season to find a suitable replacement.

Clermont’s signing of Greig Laidlaw will likely spell the end of Ludovic Radosavljevic’s term at Clermont. Radosavljevic has been with Clermont since 2008 and has 112 starts at scrum half. Clermont currently have three permanent scrum halves on the team.  Morgan Parra signed a four-year extension with Clermont last December. Enzo Sanga isn’t close to the end of his contract with Clermont.

Radosavljevic (above) is nearing the end of his contract; which will expire in June 2017. With no word of an extension for Radosavljevic, he is the most likely candidate to informed to [possibly] find a new home.

Laidlaw, is a 53 test cap veteran for Scotland and has been it’s captain since 2011. Laidlaw started his professional career at Edinburgh in 2007, where he played for seven years. During his time at Edinburgh, he was capped 139 times and scored 616 points. Laidlaw also led Scotland to the Quarter-finals of the 2015 Rugby World Cup, before losing by one point to Australia.

In 2014 he moved to the Premiership with Glouchester. In his 48 caps, he has scored more than 480 points. The announcement of Laidlaw’s move to Clermont is shocking, but it will be interesting to see how he works in the Clermont rugby system.
