After a 2-week hiatus, welcome back to another edition of Quick Snaps for Week 8 of the CFL season. It is a different look at some of the more interesting stories in and around the CFL.
CFL Week 8 Quick Snaps: Matt Nichols Shines
The Olympics may have a Golden Penny, but O’Shea’s got a shiny Nichols
All was not going well for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, they were 1-4, and head coach Mike O’Shea was in the hot seat. In addition, there were a great number of questions surrounding starting quarterback Drew Willy. A change had to be made despite telling the media he was going to wait to see how practices went that week, O’Shea changed his mind and immediately made Matt Nichols the starting quarterback.
The change paid off as Nichols has energized the Paul LaPolice offence. The Bombers have rattled off three straight wins as a result. They have brought themselves back to 4-4 on the year. The Bombers and O’Shea are heading into their bye week third in the west with the Labour Day Classic in Regina on the horizon.
Fines for fine for some, but no fines not fine for others
After the CFL’s investigation as well as the subsequent fining of the Saskatchewan Roughriders for their “pre-practise squad” of $60,000 and $26,000 off of the salary cap, not everyone was happy. Most of the sports media and social media were in shock that the Riders were getting off so easily. Others were amazed that the CFL even did anything considering most teams reportedly bend the roster rules as well.
The real question though is why has Calgary Stampeders quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell avoided being fined for his Twitter comments that set off the powder keg. Mitchell, through his twitter account, flatly accused the Riders of cheating. Which would qualify under the CFL Constitution Section 10.06 for bringing “disrepute to the league”.
Bo Levi Mitchell being right or wrong should have no bearing on him being fined. It is no different than a coach pointing out mistakes officials make. If players are allowed to start throwing around accusations on their social media at other clubs without potential repercussions, it is going to be a long tenure for Jeffery Orridge.
