The Los Angeles Rams have released quarterback Nick Foles, according to multiple sources. This clears the path for #1 overall pick Jared Goff to be the starting quarterback for the team in 2016.
Rams Release Quarterback Nick Foles
The Rams acquired Foles in a blockbuster trade with the Philadelphia Eagles after the 2014 season. The Eagles sent Foles to the Rams and the Eagles sent Sam Bradford to the Eagles. Foles threw for 27 touchdowns and just two interceptions in 2013. His most notable performance was one in which he threw for seven touchdowns against the Oakland Raiders.
He threw for 2,163 yards and 13 touchdowns through the first eight games of the 2014 season. He broke his collarbone against the Houston Texans and his season was over. Quarterback Mark Sanchez, who led the New York Jets to the AFC Championship Game in the 2009 and 2010 seasons, took over. The Eagles went from 6-2 to 10-6 and missed the playoffs.
During his time in St. Louis – the Rams moved back to Los Angeles in March – Foles threw for just 2,052 yards and seven touchdowns with 10 interceptions. The Rams finished the season 7-9 and missed the playoffs.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, Bradford hasn’t done well for them, either. He threw for 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in the 2015 season. They also finished the season 7-9 and missed the playoffs.
The Rams drafted Goff with the #1 overall pick in April’s draft. They acquired the top pick in a trade with the Tennessee Titans. The move angered Foles, and he skipped the Rams’ off-season team activities back on June 1.
Now that Foles is no longer with an NFL team, he can skip all the football he wants. Unfortunately for him, a starting quarterback position doesn’t look like it will happen, as just about all teams don’t need a starting quarterback at this point. Foles will most likely be a backup for whatever team signs him.
