Oakville, ON – Brandt Snedeker birdied five of his first six holes, and shot a six-under par 66 to take the lead on moving day at the RBC Canadian Open. He finishes the round at nine-under par, 207.
However, the fan favorite was clearly Jared du Toit. The 21-year-old Canadian amateur golfer made a 40-foot eagle putt on 18 to come in at 70. His eight-under par total will have him in the final pairing with Snedeker on Sunday.
Snedeker Leads, but Du Toit is the Story at Canadian Open
Du Toit talked about the crowd support following his round. “That was very cool. All day (the gallery has) been unbelievable. Just the atmosphere, walking to each green, walking to each tee box, ‘Go Canada,’ it’s been an unbelievable week of golf so far.”
On the crowd’s impromptu singing of Oh Canada, following his long eagle putt, “Unbelievable. I can’t say anything else but that word. It’s truly been a dream so far, and seeing that putt go in, was just a great cherry on top to the round.”
For his part, Snedeker knows who the crowd will be supporting on Sunday. “I think I’m going to be the most hated man in Canada tomorrow. It’s going to be a lot of fun. He’s still trying to figure it out. It’s great, for a 21-year-old kid to be playing golf the way he is, it’s awesome. Let alone to do it at your national open, I can’t imagine the nerves this kid has to be playing the golf that he is.”
“I’m looking forward to meeting him, I’m looking forward to playing with him. I’m going to do everything I can to help him have a great day out there tomorrow. I want him to have a great experience and really enjoy it.”
Tied with du Toit, is Dustin Johnson. Johnson had an up and down day, leading to a one-under par round of 71. He will play with Steve Wheatcroft on Sunday. As detailed earlier, Wheatcroft shot the low round of the tournament with a 64 today.
