YCCL Playoffs Bring Barn-Burners to Southwoods

The YMCA Capital City League (YCCL) Playoffs kicked off on Friday Night, bringing an upset, some crazy dunks, and a double overtime nightcap thriller.

It was yet another exciting night of YMCA Capital City League (YCCL) basketball on Friday as the playoffs got underway. Both playoff games on Friday came down to the wire and two underdogs took home the wins in the dunk and 3-point competitions.

Burton leads his team to upset victory

Game 1: #6 Hannah Homes 108, #3 Adio Chiropractic 106

It’s happened in the past, and it happened again on Friday. Deonte Burton’s team upset another in the YCCL Playoffs, this time by a last second shot by the man himself.

With under a minute left, it was tied up at 103, and Hannah Homes’ Shammond Ivory nailed a go-ahead three-pointer to put his team up by three. Just seven seconds ticked off the clock, and Adio’s Daric Lang hit a three-pointer of his own to tie the game again. Just 15 seconds remained on the clock.

Deonte Burton drove to the lane, and put up a shot from the free throw line.

Nick Babb’s 43 point, 19 rebound, and 13 assist performance was not enough to take down Hannah Homes and advance to the playoffs, but the redshirt sophomore showed off his talents with a birage of triple-doubles in 2016.

Dunk and 3-Point Contests

The favorite heading into the YCCL’s Dunk Competition was far-and-away Deonte Burton, however in the first round, Burton could not make a dunk, leaving him out of the finals.

It came down to Drake’s TJ Thomas and Air Force’s Keaton Van Soelen, as fans got to vote live on the Get Buckets Live App. Van Soelen edged out Thomas by a single vote.

In the three-point contest, Drake’s Ore Arogundade (the only player to compete in both contests) hit 21 points in the 1st round and 18 in the second to take home the win.

Renaissance Granite takes down Phoenix in Double Overtime

Game 2: #4 Renaissance Granite & Quartz 117, #5 Phoenix Renewable Resources 107 (2OT)

Monte Morris scored 36 points and added 15 rebounds to lead Renaissance to a playoff win on Friday Night. The win was Head Coach Jason Swanson’s first official career YCCL Playoff win.

Darrell Bowie put up 30 points and 12 rebounds in a losing effor for Phoenix Reneweable Resources.
