Fiji Olympics Sevens Squads Named

Fiji’s Prime Minster and Fiji Rugby Union President Voreqe Bainimarama has named the Fiji Olympics Sevens squads, the 24 Men and Women that will represent the Island Nation to the 2016 Rio Olympics. Fiji are favorites for Gold in the Men’s competition in the Olympics where Fiji has never won any medal in any sport.

The reigning  HSBC World Sevens Series champions over the past two seasons have a team full of speed, height and the arsenal to fire all cylinders from any part of the field. Their unpredictability and  unorthodox way of playing the game makes them the best exponent of the game of sevens.

Head Coach Ben Ryan had the toughest job in the world selecting the best twelve as all the squad members in their own right and can walk into any team with the knowledge and skills they have. The Englishman was proud of how the boys received their news of their selection and how those who missed out took the news.

Fiji’s mentor has opted to take a team that is full of experience with them to Rio and missing out is one of the best in the game Pio Tuwai who has struggled with injury and fitness all season, also out is France based Wise  Nayacalevu, Nemani Naqusa, Eminoni Nasilasila and of course Isake Katonibau and the man who left earlier in the week Jarryd Hayne who took to twitter to congratulate the boys.

Osea Kolinisau will again lead the side with Glasgow’s Leone Nakarawa, France based wingers Samisoni Viriviri and Toulon’s Josua Tuisova with Toulouse’s Semi Kunatani as it’s overseas based reps while making up the team is the core side from the series.

Nippy Jerry Tuwai continues his dream run, ace kicker Vatemo Ravouvou, the side stepper and super-sub Kitione Taliga, robust Savenaca Rawaca, Kolinisau, Viriviri and Tuisova make up the backline while World Rugby Sevens player of the Year Jasa Veremalua leads the forwards with Nakarawa, Viliame Mata, Kunatani and Nadroga’s hitman Apisai Domolailai.

It is a well balance side that will burn the fields of Deodoro Stadium from the 9-11th of August as they lead Pool A with Argentina, USA and host Brazil. Former English sevens player Rob Vickerman was quick to warn other teams about Fiji’s capabilities.
