The Good, the Bad and the Ugly From the Calgary Stampeders Tie

Friday night ended up being an exciting one for week three of the CFL as two games went into overtime. When a game ends in a tie, it’s always a bit of a disappointment because obviously, no one wins. And for the Calgary Stampeders, a 26-26 stalemate ended up being a good outcome from a disastrous last two minutes. Here’s the good, the bad and the ugly from the Calgary Stampeders tie with the Ottawa Redblacks.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly From the Calgary Stampeders Tie

The Good

When the Stamps were able to put some back-to-back drives together, Bo Levi Mitchell rotated between his talented receivers. Bakari Grant had a great night for his debut with the Stamps with a total of 89 yards, of which 54 were yards after the catch. And Marquay McDaniel picked up from where he left off last week with the Stamps. Defensively, Charleston Hughes registered one quarterback sack and a stripped ball from Ottawa’s Trevor Harris and rookie Alex Singleton was able to force a fumble at the goal line, redeeming himself after an earlier mistake. But that’s a play we’ll cover in the “ugly” section.

The Bad

It’s a shame to pick on the kickers, especially one as consistent as Rene Paredes. But consistent doesn’t quite describe Paredes’ season so far. We’re only in week three, but Paredes has made only eight of his attempted twelve field goals. This isn’t characteristic of Paredes, considering we’re talking about a kicker who broke a CFL record for most consecutive field goals in 2013. Ottawa’s Chris Milo didn’t fare any better though, so perhaps it was just a bad night for kickers.

The Ugly

The prize for “ugly” goes to the three Calgary penalties in the last two minutes of the game. The penalties gave Ottawa 35 yards and inched them close to the goal line. First Singleton took a roughing the passer penalty, Frank Beltre had a facemask penalty, and to wrap up the last five yards, Hughes was called offside. These penalties nearly cost the Stampeders the game, and arguably could have won the game without them. Fortunately, Singleton, as mentioned earlier, redeemed himself by forcing a fumble on the one-yard line which was recovered by Joshua Bell.

The game was not Calgary’s best and they were still fortunate to at least walk away with one point facing the best team in the East. But if Dave Dickenson wants to continue John Hufnagel’s legacy in Calgary, he will need to address these costly mistakes.
