Now there is something you don’t see every day – a rare overtime tie in the Canadian Football League. The Ottawa Redblacks and Calgary Stampeders end in a 26-26 overtime draw at TD Place in week three. Here are some takeaways from the Redblacks tie in week three:
Ottawa Redblacks Tie: Rare Overtime Draw
Missed Opportunities
Although this was a hard fought game by both sides, Ottawa did get at least three different chances to put it away. First, there was a questionable decision on their first drive. After scoring a touchdown, Ottawa decided to go for the two-point covert and was not successful. But that hinged on a questionable decision, especially because it was the first scoring play of the game.
A second missed opportunity was missed field goals. It was a rough night for Chris Milo: two missed field goals on four attempts. And lastly, there was an overtime interception drop by Jermaine Robinson. If that ball had been caught, Ottawa would have won the game. Mistakes do happen, but players also have to take responsibility for their mistakes and missed opportunities.
Pass Rush Game Needs Improvements
Ottawa has a great ability to stop the passing game very quickly. However, the defence is still not impressing on the pass rush. They aren’t putting enough pressure on opposing teams’ quarterbacks. While the team is able to maintain a fairly solid defence despite the off-season losses, work still needs to be done. When the defence doesn’t put enough pressure on a quarterback, there is too much time for them to find their targets and hit them accurately.
Ottawa should use this game and take notes on their mistakes and find where improvements need to be made. In a tough Eastern division, they will need to step up to have another chance at the Grey Cup this year.
