Panelists’ Predictions 2016 Wimbledon Women’s Matches–Middle Sunday Special

Well, the rain messed with our predicting schedule, along with just about everything else. We couldn’t make predictions for Saturday’s matches because those had been pretty much covered in the predictions for Thursday and Friday, but we get to give you predictions for Middle Sunday, a rare treat indeed. Predicting today are myself (Yesh Ginsburg) and Senior Tennis Editor Steen Kirby.

Panelists’ Predictions 2016 Wimbledon Women’s Matches–Middle Sunday Special

Ekaterina Makarova vs Barbora Strycova
Steen:
This pair have split Wimbledon meetings, with Makarova coming off a momentum and confidence building win over Kvitova, I have to go with her to prevail.
Prediction: Makarova in 3

Yesh:
These two play even on grass, so this could really go either way. Strycova is the more consistent player overall, but this just feels like Makarova’s tournament to make a big run. Give me the slight upset.
Prediction: Makarova in 3

Timea Bacsinszky vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova
Steen:
A tough match to predict, I give the Swiss a slight edge over her younger counterpart.
Prediction: Bacsinsky in 2

Yesh:
Honestly, I’m always tempted to pick against Pavlyuchenkova just so I don’t have to type out her name too much. In all seriousness, though, I have good reason to pick Bacsinszky here. She’s a little better on grass and she has more experience in the bigger moments. The young Swiss is well on her way to stardom, and this tournament will be a further step in that direction.
Prediction: Bacsinszky in 3

Sloane Stephens Vs Svetlana Kuznetsova
Steen:
The veteran Russian is the favorite, but I’m going to go with Stephens in an upset; she should outlast her opponent in this match.
Prediction: Stephens in 3

Yesh:
I have picked against Kuznetsova twice this tournament so far, which has not worked out either time. Still, Sloane Stephens looks in great form and Kuznetsova isn’t consistent enough to keep up her amazing form much longer. This should have plenty of highlight-reel power points. Don’t miss it.
Prediction: Stephens in 3

Coco Vandeweghe vs Roberta Vinci
Steen:
Vandeweghe has been in tremendous form as of late, on grass I have to predict her over Vinci.
Prediction: Vandeweghe in 2

Yesh:
Vandeweghe looks as good right now as she ever has in her career. Seriously, she looks to be in Slam-winning form. Vinci has done surprisingly well this tournament, especially given her extreme lack of success on grass in the past, but the run ends here, in eye-popping fashion.
Prediction: Vandeweghe in 2

Serena Williams vs Annika Beck
Steen:
Despite losing a set in the previous round, Serena should roll over the less-accomplished Beck.
Prediction: Serena in 2

Yesh:
Serena struggled against an on-fire Christina McHale, but the German doesn’t have the same game that the young American does. Expect Serena to win this with much less trouble than in her last round.
Prediction: Serena in 2
