Florida Panthers Sign Reilly Smith to Extension

The Florida Panthers continue to give contract extensions to their young players, locking up Reilly Smith, in their latest move.  The deal is for five-years and reportedly for $25 million, which means an AAV/Cap hit of $5 million per year. TSN’s Gary Lawless was first with the news on twitter.

Smith’s deal comes after a six-year extension for Vincent Trocheck, and an eight-year extension for Aaron Ekblad.

Smith joined the Panthers after a trade with the Boston Bruins last summer. He scored 25 goals and added 25 assists for 50 points in 82 this year. He also scored four goals and four assists for eight points in the Panthers first round playoff loss to the New York Islanders. The eight points led the team.

Smith’s new contract will begin in the 2017-18 season. He has one-year left on his current contract with a cap hit of $3.425 million. Smith would have been a restricted free agent next July.

Smith has scored 61 goals and 89 assists for 150 points over 285 career NHL games. He has played for the Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins and Panthers. Smith was selected in the third round, 69th overall, of the 2009 NHL Draft by the Stars.
