Versatile forward Frans Nielsen signed an six-year, $31.5 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings. The underrated 32-year-old Nielsen is a talented 200-foot player, one that can slot in nearly anywhere in any lineup. Nielsen registered 20 goals and 32 assists in 81 contests last season for the New York Islanders. It was the second time in the past three campaigns Nielsen eclipsed the 50-point mark.

Frans Nielsen Signs With the Red Wings
Nielsen spent his entire career on Long Island after being the club’s 3rd round selection in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. The Herning, Denmark native played four years in the Swedish Elite League after being drafted by the Islanders in 2002. He finally came to North America ahead of the 2006-07 season. He spent the majority of his first year in the AHL with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He also dressed for 15 games with New York in call-up duty. Nielsen earned a full-time line-up spot the following season.

Lodged firmly in a middle-six role behind All-Star John Tavares, Nielsen is a steady two-way player with good on-ice vision. He is regarded more as a play maker than a goal scorer. Nielsen raises his linemates to his level. He served as an alternate captain with the Islanders and was consistently part of both the penalty kill and power play units.
Replacing Nielsen a Challenge
Nielsen signed his last deal with New York in 2012 for $11 million over four years. Allowing Neilsen to leave via free agency means General Manager Garth Snow could already have an eye on a replacement. Whether it is a young player or a veteran, there will be a sizeable hole to fill.
Nielsen’s appeared in 606 NHL regular season games, scoring 119 goals and 230 assists. In 24 Stanley Cup Playoff games Nielsen’s recorded ten points as well. He has been a positive possession player as well. Neilsen has a relative CF% of 50.6, despite the fact he started the majority of his shifts in the defensive zone throughout his career.
