David Perron Signs With the Blues
The former St. Jerome Panther’s deal is a slight pay cut from his previous contract he signed back in 2012 that has paid him $3.8 million per season the past four years.
Perron, 28, has a modest NHL resume. Last season he got off to a dreadful start with the Penguins scoring four goals and 16 points over 43 games. Not what you’d expect when sacrificing a first round pick for someone’s duties. Seeing an opportunity to acquire a more speedy player to add to Mike Sullivan‘s arsenal, general manager Jim Rutherford traded Perron to the Ducks for Carl Hagelin. The former Ranger was also struggling with Anaheim (four goals in 43 games). The trade seemed to turn both players’ seasons around, as Perron scored eight goals and 20 points in just 28 games with a high-flying Ducks team.
Meanwhile, Hagelin played a huge role on a line with Nick Bonino and Phil Kessel. He scored ten goals and 27 points in the final 37 games; and adding six more goals in the playoffs en route to a Stanley Cup Championship. Following the trade the teams combined for a 55-18-5 record.
Selected 26th overall in the 2007 entry draft by the Blues, the Blues are getting back a guy that, if put in the right system can put points up in bunches as a complementary scorer.
Traded Two Years in a Row
It’s interesting to note how a trade to a different team turned his season around in two consecutive years. In 2014-15, with the Oilers he had just five goals in 38 games before posting a 57.8% CF% with the Penguins. In 43 contests with Pittsburgh he scored 12 goals. Paired with one of the best playmakers in the game in Ryan Getzlaf did wonders for him and the game he likes to play down low cycling the puck this season, as he posted a 55% CF% with Anaheim in addition to his superior numbers. Before his 30th birthday, he’s put up five 40+ point seasons and has scored 20+ goals three times topping out at 28 in 2013-14.
