Serena Williams, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Andy Murray, Juan Martin Del Potro, and Stan Wawrinka all prevailed in a rain plagued day two of action at Wimbledon.
Kuznetsova against Caroline Wozniacki was the blockbuster match of the day. Kuznetsova, the 13 seed and two-time Slam winner against former #1 Wozniacki. Wozniacki skipped the entire clay season with injury and thus not much was expected from her with her return on the grass.
Day Two: Kuznetsova wins Blockbuster
Kuznetsova, the clear aggressor in this matchup, hit 23 winners to her opponent’s nine in a 7-5 6-4. Grass has never been a friendly surface for the Russian; her heavy forehand loses a bit of its sting on the low quick bouncing grass of the All England Club. She’s reached the quarterfinals on two occasions.
Wozniacki’s woes in 2016 continue as she falls to 11-11 on the year and 0-2 in Grand Slam play this year. She will fall out of the top 50 for the first time since 2008.
Kuznetsova now faces Brit Tara Moore, who’s had a string of good results in the grass warmups.
Del Potro and Wawrinka, two Slam winners in the era of the big 4 in men’s tennis, set up a mouthwatering clash in the second round.
Wawrinka fought off 18-year-old Taylor Fritz in four sets. The Swiss fired 48 winners to get the job done. Del Potro impressed with a quick win over Fabrice Martin, sending a message to his higher ranked opponent. Despite their grand slam success, neither has lifted the trophy at Wimbledon. They’ve played once at the All England Club back in 2008 with Wawrinka coming out on top
Serena Williams had a rough day at the office but still won over qualifier Amra Sadikovic 6-2 6-4. A rare stat in which the American had more double faults than aces forced her to work off the ground more to prevail.
Furthermore, Richard Gasquet and Nick Kyrgios were winners on day two as well.
First round action will continue tomorrow as rain interrupted play.
