Iowa State newcomer Solomon Young played in his first game, and the Drake players are starting to really make their mark as the YMCA Capital City League reaches its halfway point of the season. Full game recaps, playoff standings and more can be found below.
Solomon Young impresses in YCCL Debut
ADIO Chiropractic (2-2) 107, Renaissance Granite & Quartz (2-2) 101
Incoming Cyclone Solomon Young made his YMCA Capital City League debut on Friday Night, leading his team with 37 points and seven rebounds to earn the win. The 6’6, 220 pounder out of California certainly opened some eyes as he threw down some of the best dunks the YCCL has seen all season.
Coming out of nowhere this season is Johannes Dolven out of Drake. He redshirted last season, so no one knew what to expect coming into summer league this year. On Friday, Dolven was one rebound away from going three straight games with 20 points and 20 rebounds.
On the other side of things, Renaissance Granite & Quartz was without Monte Morris again. However, this time they would not have enough depth to to finish off Adio, whom were tied with RGQ at halftime. Jordan Stotts lead the team with 34 points, including six 3-pointers, and nine rebounds.
Vorland takes down Cyclone-less Phoenix
Tim Vorland Photography (3-1) 120, Phoenix Renewable Resources (1-3) 112
It did not look good for Phoenix Renewable Resources on Friday, as both Naz Mitrou-Long and Darrell Bowie were absent from play, the only two players to score above double digits in each of the last two games for the team.
However, thanks to the leadership of Kyliaue Lipscombe, Phoenix RR kept the game close, and even lead for a majority of the game. Although he did not lead the team in any statistical categories, Lipscombe was taking the role of player/coach in the close loss. He played a big part on Friday.
Arogundade leads Lions Club to fourth straight win
DM Outreach Lions Club (4-0) 125, Hannah Homes (0-4) 122
In game three, Ore Arogundade took off for his best shooting night on the season, tallying 38 points and shooting 59%, leading his DM Outreach Lions Club to yet another win. He got a lot of help from his teammates as Jakolby Long went for 30, Matt Tiby for 27, and Jacob Enevold took a loud 18 points and eight rebounds to keep the undefeated season intact.
For Hannah Homes, current Drake Bulldogs Graham Woodward and Nick McGlynn stepped up their games to earn 32 and 21 points. YCCL Veteran Reed Mells also had 27.
