YCCL Night 3: YMCA Capital City Summer League heating up, literally

Some stars began to shine on the third flight of YCCL games in 2016. Read all about what happened in each game from correspondent Connor Ferguson

Some stars began to shine on Wednesday Night during the YMCA Capital City’s (YCCL) 3rd round of games. However during game two things got a little chippy during the first half between the Des Moines Outreach Lions Club and Vorland Photography. Full game recaps, playoff standings and more can be found below.

Burton vs. Curry and TerHark does not disappoint

ADIO Chiropractic (1-2) 118, Hannah Homes (0-3) 116

The first game of the night did not disappoint the early arriving YCCL fans. It came down to a missed, last second lay-up and gave ADIO Chiropractic their first win of the young season.

West Des Moines Valley HS will-be senior, Quinton Curry, was given the task of guarding will-be collegiate senior, Deonte Burton, on Wednesday Night. Curry hit a three-pointer to put ADIO up by 14 points early in the first half, Burton then made four in a row, each a foot further back than the last, and the game was tied just a few minutes later.

Pretty soon, Luke Terhark got in on the action and made six three pointers on the night to compete with Burton’s.

In the end, ADIO finished with four players scoring 20 points – Quinton Curry 29, Nick Babb 25, Luke TerHark 23, Johannes Dolven 21.

Things get chippy, but stars shine

It happens in all sports, players talk to each other and they might not say the nicest things. In this case Jordan Johnson seemed to instigate both Matt Tiby and Ore Arogundade. Each of them had some words in return for the former DM Roosevelt HS player. Things started to get out of hand when Terrence Bush stood up for his player and refs needed to get involved.

Things cooled down in the second half, but they heated up at the same time. All four of the players involved got hot, as Johnson and Bush finished with 41 and 35 points, while Ore Arogundade and Tiby combined for 61.

Ola Arogundade made a few good defensive plays as well, finishing with 17 points, to help the DM Outreach Lions Club remain undefeated.

Mitrou-Long can’t do it all as Renaissance Granite cruises

Renaissance Granite & Quartz (2-1) 109, Phoenix Renewable Resources (1-2) 96

Naz Mitrou-Long came off of his 72 point performance to score 43 on Wednesday Night, but Phoenix RR still lost by 13. At one point they were down by 30. Mitrou-Long did get some help from Darrell Bowie who shot 53% good for 20 points, however he it was not near enough. It was another tough night for Phoenix RR.

For the second straight game, Mitrou-Long and Bowie were the only players on the team to score in the double digits, leaving Phoenix RR at 1-2 on the year.

Renaissance Granite is the complete opposite. Although they do not have the biggest names in the league, the team makes it work. Not one player on the team scored more than 22 points. Six out of the eight players scored in the double digits.

In the true, team effort; Travon Mitchell had 22 points, Jordan Stotts had 20, TJ Thomas had 16, Wes Greder at 14, Detae McMurray had 14, and Teyontae Jenkins added 13.
