David Wright to Undergo Neck Surgery; Out for the Season

New York Mets third baseman David Wright will undergo surgery Thursday to address a herniated disk in his neck. Dr. Robert Watkins will perform the procedure in Marina del Rey, California. Watkins is already treating Wright for chronic spinal stenosis.

Wright, 33, initially tried rest, rehab and anti-inflammatory injections to address the painful neck issue, to no avail. It seems that surgery was his last option.

“After trying every way to get back on the field, I’ve come to realize that it’s best for me, my teammates and the organization to proceed with surgery at this time,” Wright said in a statement.

David Wright is a tough player, who has a toughness about him that is one of his trademarks. His contract is through the year 2020, though it’s doubtful he’ll be able to complete it. With all going on, it would be amazing to see Wright back on the field in 2017, as much as he wants to.

Wright is a .296 career hitter in 12 seasons with with Mets, his only team, while hitting only .226 in 37 games this season with seven homers and 14 RBIs.

The Mets said Wright’s return date “will be determined based on the results of the procedure and the progress of his recovery.”

Wright has been a cornerstone of the Mets since his debut in 2004. He is a seven time All Star (06-13) and 2012 NL Defensive Player of the Year. Wright also has two Gold Gloves (07-08) and two Silver Slugger (07-08) awards to his name.

Replacement Options

Wright’s decision does clarify the team’s situation for general manager Sandy Alderson as the trade deadline approaches. The Mets have primarily used Wilmer Flores at third base, with recently acquired Kelly Johnson also available at the position.

Wright is under contract through the 2020 season. Wright’s contract, which pays him as much as $20 million annually, is insured. The Mets expect to recoup 75% of Wright’s salary for any time he misses beyond a 60-day absence.

The Mets currently sit five games back of first place behind the Washington Nationals in the National League West.
