The Baltimore Ravens have released offensive tackle Eugene Monroe on Wednesday. The team was looking to trade him by the end of the week, but have decided to cut ties with him instead.

The move comes after Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti said that he would remain with the Ravens back in March. “We think the world of him. But you have to know what you get out of the guy, and Eugene has been a pretty durable player these last couple years,” he said on Monroe’s behalf.
Monroe was held out of the team’s mandatory minicamps while they look for a potential team that they could trade him to, head coach John Harbaugh said.
He began his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2009, when the team drafted him in the first round out of the University of Virginia.
In 2013, the Ravens signed Monroe to a contract through 2018. He was expected to make about $8.5 million in the 2016 season from Baltimore. He had even signed a five-year, $37.5 million deal in March 2014. He played left tackle in Baltimore during the time he was healthy, which wound up only being a total of 17 games.
Now, the only guaranteed money for him is from injury. He missed 15 games over the last two seasons. 10 of those games were due to a shoulder injury suffered in 2015.
The Ravens drafted offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley with the sixth overall pick in April’s draft, so they should not have any worry about finding Monroe’s placement as they go through minicamp.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that there are now three teams that could be interested in Monroe. Those teams were the New York Giants, Seattle Seahawks and San Diego Chargers.
Schefter also reported that the Giants had actually been in talks with the Ravens to acquire Monroe in a trade. Those talks fell through, however.
