Cal Quantrill 2016 MLB Draft Profile
Quantrill is largely considered to be the ace of Stanford’s staff, though he has yet to pitch in 2016 due to Tommy John Surgery, which has been a cause for concern among some scouts. But before he got hurt, he made three starts, going 2-0 with 20 strikeouts in 18.2 innings. He is the son of former All-Star relief pitcher Paul Quantrill. He also took home the Pac-12 Conference’s Freshman of the Year Award in 2014. Quantrill was drafted once before, by the Yankees in the 26th round of the 2013 draft, right out of high school.
Strengths:
- Plus changeup that sits between 77-81 mph
- Good velocity on fastball, peaking at 95 mph
- Plus command (only 34 walks in 110.2 innings pitched)
- Owns a strikeout-to-walk ratio of nearly 3:1
- Averages over six innings per start
Weaknesses:
- Health
- Breaking pitches
- Never thrown more than 110 innings
MLB Comparison: Cole Hamels, Texas Rangers
Projected Pick Range: 15-25
Most Likely Landing Spot: San Diego Padres, Washington Nationals, Oakland Athletics
Bottom Line
Quantrill has proven that he’s the real deal at Stanford, but his health may ultimately be the deciding factor in where he gets drafted. If a team is desperate, it may draft him in the middle of the first round, if not, he could fall to late in the first round. He is a workhorse and has a penchant for striking out batters, both of which will play to his advantage.
