Training camps are finally open for all Canadian football teams, which means football season is officially back. The competition is only just beginning though. Today, the Last Word On Sports CFL Department will be focusing on the Ottawa Redblacks and their quarterback depth chart heading into training camp.
Ottawa Redblacks Quarterback Depth Chart
Henry Burris
Coming off of his best season in his football career, Henry Burris is ready for another season of football. Burris won the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player Award last season, leading Ottawa to win the Eastern Division and taking them all the way to the Grey Cup. In his MOP season, Burris made 481/678 completions (71% completion), 5693 yards, and 26 touchdowns, with a few other achievements and broken records along the way as well. The Redblacks made it clear that they expect Burris to be their starting quarterback going into the 2016 season.
Trevor Harris
Coming off of his first season as a starting quarterback with the Toronto Argonauts, Trevor Harris has shown that he can be a starting quarterback in this league. He made 382/538 completions (71% completion), 4354 yards, and 33 touchdowns. Harris was one of the big reasons why Toronto was in the playoffs last year. He does give more quarterback competition at training camp and is expected to make a run for the transition into the starting role this season as well.
Danny O’Brien
Danny O’Brien played a few snaps with the Redblacks before this past season, completing 16 passes on 22 attempts. Despite the small sample size, there is a bigger and better sample size of him in college years with Maryland. With the Terrapins, O’Brien posted 4086 yards and 29 touchdowns over the 2010 and 2011 seasons. In 2012 with Wisconsin, he had 523 yards and three touchdowns over the span of seven games. Lastly, he finished up his college football career with Catawba College, posting 2490 yards and 15 touchdowns over the span of ten games. When you add those stats up, it makes 7099 yards and 47 touchdowns in his college football career. He also had a 127.5 QB rating. This guy no doubt has potential and will be fighting for that third quarterback spot with Brock Jensen.
Brock Jensen
He may not be close to a starting quarterback on this team, but Jensen will certainly be fighting for a spot on the roster with Danny O’Brien, to say the least. In college football, he led North Dakota State to three national championships in a row in 2011, 2012, and 2013. He has potential as well as O’Brien does and will put up his best ability in training camp to show that he deserves a roster spot in the near future.
