BREAKING: Smackdown Going Live, Brand Split Coming

Just over an hour ago, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon announced via the WWE website, that beginning July 19, the WWE’s second flagship program, Smackdown, would be moving from it’s Thursday night timeslot on USA Network – where it currently resides as a pre-taped program – to following Monday Night Raw on Tuesday as their second weekly LIVE program.

“WWE’s flagship programs will both leverage the incredible depth of our talent roster, distinct storylines and the unpredictable nature of live TV,” WWE Chairman Mr. McMahon said. “This move will undoubtedly build more excitement and deepen engagement with our fans around the world.”

While this was a big bombshell – and one that many WWE fans have been clamouring for – it was followed by even more anticipated news, that the WWE would be heading towards another run at a brand split. With the WWE Main Roster about to become it’s largest in company history, despite its recent round of releases, the thinking is that it could help elevate more stars and showcase more storylines. Stephanie and Shane McMahon also released a video with their comments on the situation. No comments yet on how this will affect the lesser programs like Main Event or Superstars, or if it will have an impact on NXT, as of press time, but this bold move definitely makes Smackdown more of a “must see” program with the live element of surprise.

Last Word On Sports wrestling writers will be adding their voice to this discussion throughout the day and week to come, so come back for more details and analysis from our Pro Wrestling writing staff with their thoughts on this bold new direction for the WWE.
