Kyle Muller 2016 MLB Draft Profile
Kyle Muller is a lean, tall, hard-throwing left-hander looking to make a splash in a large field of talented pitchers entering this years draft. The 6’5” senior was invited to the 2015 National Showcase, where he dazzled scouts with the good command of his fastball, which topped out at 91 MPH. Back in March, Muller threw a gem in which he struck out the first eighteen batters he faced, and ended with twenty-one strikeouts on the night. Because he had stuck out the last six hitters he faced in his previous start, his total for consecutive strikeouts was upped to twenty-four, a new national record.
Strengths:
- Good command of fastball. Works both sides of plate with speed that averages 91 MPH
- Tall lean build give him good extension in his simple 3/4 wind up
- Shows good deception in delivery and velocity drop offs in off speed pitches
Weaknesses:
- Muller’s curveball is inconsistent because his delivery can get a bit methodical
- Sometimes shows his changeup, letting hitter know off speed is coming
MLB Comparison: Clayton Kershaw
Projected Pick Range: 15-25
Most Likely Landing Spot: Houston Astros
Bottom Line
Muller shows a lot of poise with his 6’5’’ frame, giving batters a hard time with his angles. He shows good command with his fastball, and has increased his speed and gained strength recently. He’s a decent hitter to boot, with the ability to play first base or outfield. Expect to see him go early, and to develop quickly.
