MLS Pick 'Em 2016 – Week 11 – Portland Timbers v. Vancouver Whitecaps

Last week, some technical difficulties meant that we were unable to post the pick ’em article. I assure you, the points were gained fairly by Daniel, Russ, and Eric. Each of them correctly predicted a win for Sporting Kansas City over Orlando City SC. Here are the updated standings:

Player Points Correct Outcome Incorrect Correct Score
Eric Walcott 13 5 4 4
Joseph Goldstein 5 3 6 1
Matt Pollard 5 3 6 1
Joe Hojnacki 4 2 7 1
Russ McKenzie 4 2 7 1
Daniel Sperry 3 1 8 1
Alec Rivera 1 1 8 0
Ned Joyce 1 1 8 0
Laura McFayden 0 0 9 0

This week, we take a look at a Cascadia classic, Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps. These two rivals seem to be headed in different directions, but these games can never be taken lightly. Vancouver has had all of the luck of late, winning three straight. Portland has lost three, including a loss on the road to the Whitecaps and a loss at home to New York City FC. Can Portland stop the skid and end the Whitecaps win streak? Let’s see what the experts say:

MLS Pick ‘Em 2016 – Week 11 – Portland Timbers v. Vancouver Whitecaps

Eric Walcott @EricWSoccer

POR
(3-2)

Portland has all the pieces for a great attack even if Fanendo Adi is out, and it will click in a rivalry match. They’ll likely be without Diego Chara though and that hole in the midfield means they give up a couple.

Alec Rivera @Alec_F_

POR
(3-1)

Ask one of the Timbers army and they’ll tel you the city is burning, but this Cascadia match won’t disappoint the Rose City faithful. Vancouver’s inconsistency will be their undoing; after three consecutive positive performances, Vancouver will slip…hard. Timbers get revenge for their loss at BC Place.

Russ McKenzie @Russ_McKenzie

POR
(2-1)

The Timbers have to toss water on the dumpster fire that has been slowly building. What better way to do it than renewing hostilities with Vancouver. This game is going to be decided at the death, I can just feel it.

Ned Joyce @nedjoyce

VAN
(3-2)

Vancouver is getting their magic back and NYCFC helped demoralize the Timbers faithful. Portland will make it a match late but this has Whitecaps all over it.

Matt Pollard @LWOSMattPollard

DRAW
(2-2)

Vancouver has won three games in a row. Portland has lost three in a row. The Timbers are playing bad and they should feel bad. But, Cascadia match ups are usually ridiculous and unpredictable. We’re not sure what’s going on with Kudo. Kekuta Manneh will make some magic for happen for the Caps but Caleb Porter and Co. will say “enough is enough” in this match. They won’t get the win, but they’ll walk away feeling good about the result with a 2-2 draw.

Daniel Sperry @LWOSDaniel

DRAW
(2-2)

Vancouver have been porous on defense, and Portland have been pretty crappy overall. Vancouver is being typical Vancouver, either hot or ice cold. Currently they’re hot, but Portland, at home will get up for this game and even it out.

Joe Hojnacki @SportsDeskJoe

VAN
(2-1)

Portland has lost three straight and with their inability to score and with Fanendo Adi’s status uncertain, I don’t see them being able to keep up with a heating up Vancouver attack. Be prepared to make it four straight 2-1 defeats in the Rose City.

Laura McFayden @laura_irene_

VAN
(3-1)

The Whitecaps are on a three win hot streak while the Timbers are on a three loss cold streak. With no Adi and possibly no Chara, Portland will be hurting. Vancouver will come out on top and increase their run to four straight wins.

Joseph Goldstein

DRAW
(1-1)
This game should be a perfect remedy for some of the Timber’s struggles this season, but it will go from a tight result to a draw after a late goal from Vancouver.
