Derek Dennis had the dream of playing in the NFL, like any other football player, but after a brief stint on the Carolina Panthers practice roster, he looked to the Calgary Stampeders and the CFL to pursue his pro football career. He started the last five games and both playoff games for Calgary in 2015. He will look to stabilize the offensive line this season and protect Bo Levi Mitchell. LWOS’s Cole Shelton got a chance to sit down with Temple product.
LWOS Interview with Derek Dennis
Shelton: Why did you want to be an offensive lineman? Was that the position you played your whole life?
Dennis: I started playing football in the 11th grade and I was a defensive lineman/tight end. I then got moved to the offensive line in college at Temple and I have been there since.
Shelton: What is your favourite part of playing the offensive line?
Dennis: Being a protector and enforcer, I love the physicality of it – the pure principal of trying to beat the will out of another man. Being an offensive lineman is the essence of football to me!
Shelton: What has been the hardest challenge and biggest difference with the CFL game, compared to the American game?
Dennis: Canadian football has some small changes but nothing drastic. The biggest adjustment for me was the yard off the ball and only having three downs. The CFL game has taught me to be a little more patient in my play to succeed.
Shelton: In your eyes, what is the expectation for the 2016 Calgary Stampeders?
Dennis: Nothing less than a Grey Cup win. Anything short of that is disappointing to everyone in franchise. I view us as the New England Patriots of Canada, that’s the standard the players before have set for the franchise.
Shelton: Wow, bold. With the new jerseys dropping last week, what do you think of Calgary’s?
Dennis: I think they look amazing. I love our new away jerseys and the Outlaw uniform, which is one of my favourite overall league wide. I think the look builds anticipation for this season.
Shelton: Finally, what is one thing you want to say to Calgary fans?
Dennis: Just want Calgary fans to know I love them and [their] support, and to be ready to bring tons of energy and excitement as we go for another Grey Cup! Go Stamps Go!
Shelton: Thank you for taking time out of your day to do this.
Dennis: No problem man.
