Cody Sedlock MLB Draft Profile
Sedlock, a former reliever, has flourished in 2016 after being granted an expanded role. The Fighting Illini pitcher is now a starter who currently leads the Big Ten conference in strikeouts and has expanded his ability to get hitters out with a heavy sinker and wipeout slider. Sedlock possesses wicked stuff; for him, it is all about the mental game. This has lead to comparisons between Sedlock and Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta. Kevin Barry, head of scouting on the Northeast for the Atlanta Braves, praised the right-hander for his growth. “He’s made great strides since high school. For a guy to be in the bullpen last year and doing these things now- that’s impressive,” lauded Barry.
Strengths:
- Consistently throws four pitches
- Fills the strike zone
- Big, strong frame
- Versatile- can be a reliever or starter
- Heavy sinker
Weaknesses:
- Curveball and changeup needs improvement
MLB Comparison: Jake Arrieta
Projected Pick Range: 1-20
Most Likely Landing Spot: Chicago White Sox
Bottom Line:
Cody Sedlock has taken full advantage of his role as a starting pitcher. His 2.82 ERA displays his dominance in a strong Big Ten conference. Sedlock’s velocity improves almost 4 MPH as a reliever, which gives MLB teams a choice as they further evaluate Cody and determine his ultimate role in the big leagues. Sedlock carries all the tools to become an above-average Major League pitcher. His mental development will dictate if he realizes that potential.
