Matt Krook 2016 MLB Draft Profile

Bio:

Matt Krook was born October 21st, 1994 in San Mateo, California. He attended St. Ignatius College Preparatory High School where he was named a First Team All-American and All-Region by Perfect Game. MaxPreps also named him to the All-State team. Originally picked 35th overall by Miami out of high school he decided to attend Oregon after a dispute over a physical. Even though his freshman season was cut short due to injury he was still named a Louisville Slugger First-Team Freshman All-American. Krook is now a redshirt sophomore at Oregon. He is returning from Tommy John surgery and has yet to pitch a full collegiate season. However he remains one of the top prospects in this year’s draft.

Strengths

  • Very good mid-nineties fastball
  • Curveball with great movement
  • A decent major league change-up
  • Looks huge on the mound

Weaknesses

  • Has had control issues in the past
  • Has not pitched an entire season yet due to injury
  •  Is coming back from Tommy John surgery

MLB Comparison: Chris Sale, Chicago White Sox

Projected Pick Range: 5-15

Most Likely Landing Spot: Chicago White Sox

Bottom Line

Krook could turn out to be the steal of the draft, just like Sale was in 2010, for that reason the White Sox will take another chance on a big lefty. Who better to mentor him than his MLB comparison? There will surely be a ton of major league scouts hanging around Eugene to see how he pitches leading up to the draft. If Krook is able to prove that his arm is strong and he is well recovered from his Tommy John surgery then he has the ability to shoot up the draft boards. If there is any doubt about his health look for him to go in the middle of round 1, however if he preforms well there is a good chance his name could be called in the top 5.
