WrestlePro: Mr. Belding Powerbomb

Last night in Brooklyn, New York, WrestlePro’s event had a little bit for everyone, even featuring a Mr. Belding powerbomb through a table.

WrestlePro is an independent wrestling promotion operating in New Jersey and New York, run by Pat Buck. Debuting after a split with Pro Wrestling Syndicate, the company’s first show in Brooklyn was a display of local talent and well-traveled independent veterans all on one card.

WrestlePro: Mr. Belding Powerbomb

Tag Title Match

Big Deal Craig Steele and Micah Jenkins (c) vs Team Espana

The evening started with a tag team title bout pitting the champions Big Deal Craig Steele and Micah Jenkins led by Gino Gotz against Team Espana, comprised of Jose and JosB. The Taboo Crew were able to successfully retain their titles despite the antics of the Spanish footballers, to the delight of crowd. As they celebrated their title win, Steele showered his fans in fake money that pictured Steele himself, courtesy of his money gun. Jenkins and Steele feed off each other well and are starting to develop more cohesion and chemistry in the ring as a tag team.

Deonna Purrazzo vs Chelsea Green

The second match of the evening saw Chelsea Green, of Tough Enough fame take on Deonna Purrazzo, who most recently appeared on WWE NXT. The contest was a combination of chain wrestling and mat based wrestling, putting both women’s skillsets to the test. The action was back and forth all contest, with Chelsea picking up the win in a hard fought match, besting one of the hottest female free agents on the independent scene. Coming off the excitement of the tag title match, the crowd was a bit lackluster, considering the number of near falls and false finishes seen during the match. With the popularity of both women, this is certainly a match we could be seeing again, possibly on the WWE Network on NXT programming.

Chris Payne vs The Croatian Sensation Mario Bokara

Chris Payne came to ringside and being a local boy, garnered crowd support despite his gruff and aloof demeanor. Bokara put his strength on display during this match, executing an impressive five consecutive german suplexes, bringing Suplex City to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn-if only for one night. The Croatian Sensation consistently stayed one step ahead of Payne, but was felled by outside interference. Ed Jackson, Payne’s manager, distracted the referee and tossed his client a nightstick, which Payne subsequently used to his advantage. Driving the foreign object squarely into Bokara’s midsection, Payne incapacitated the Croatian star and secured the victory.

Six Man Tag

The Aesthetic Males 3.0 (Beefcake Charlie, Damian Gibbs, Mike Del) vs Bobby Wayward, Nikos Rikos and The Golden Boy.

There are times when the right pairing of partners can create an entertaining faction that catches everyone by surprise and this match featured one such squad. The Aesthetic Males feed off of each other and have a captivating energy. The crowd was hot for this match, exploding into cheers as Beefcake Charlie launched himself off the second rope, hitting his opponents with successive moonsaults-a sight to be seen as the man is upwards of 6’4 and 300lbs. The trio were able to get the better of their opponents and celebrated with the fans as their theme song, a parody of the old WCW American Males blared over the loudspeakers.

Delroy Alexander vs Anthony Nese

This match may have been the best wrestled contest of the night. The Premier Athlete Anthony Nese and Alexander are two of the most athletic men on WrestlePro roster. Both men put it all out inside and outside the ring, with suicide dives and leaps of the top rope punctuating an exciting back and forth match. Both men wrestled as faces here and either could challenge Macintosh for the title, but for the time being, Alexander will be one notch above nese after a roll up victory. Nese showed good sportsmanship at the end of the match, offering a congratulatory handshake that surprisingly did not lead to a sore loser beatdown. Given a little bit more time in the future, these two could steal the show.

Mr. Belding Powerbomb

Heavenly Bodies Gigolo Justin and Desirable Dustin vs Zack Morris and A.C. Slater with Mr. Belding

The Heavenly bodies, seemingly never had a chance against the tandem led by Dennis Haskins, of Saved By the Bell fame. Cleverly disguised as Zack Morris and A.C. Slater, Kevin Matthews and Pat Buck donned Bayside High singlets and ridiculous wigs, which undoubtedly led to them gaining the upper-hand for most of the match. As it started to seem that the Heavenly Bodies were going to lose, Buster Jackson came to ringside to tip the scales for his cronies. Following the disqualification,he was triple-powerbombed by Matthews, Buck and  through a table, as can be seen here, courtesy of Breanna Baldwin.

Last Word on Sports was able to speak with Kevin Matthews who shared about his experience with Mr. Belding. “Three and a half years ago when Dennis Haskins did his first pro wrestling event it happened to be at my match with Sami Callihan. He was the outside enforcer and I was a heel at the time, as opposed to working as a babyface, which I am now. So this is the first time that we were working on the same side of the fence. Working with him is phenomenal, it’s awesome. I’m 33 now, so if you do the timeline, I was like 9 or 10 [when the show was on], so I grew up watching Saved by the Bell. Anyone who was in attendance could see me singing along-I knew that theme song word for word. I’m a fan, so it was cool ”.

Johnny Clash vs Chris Avery Quelling

With a slightly veiled reference to the Netflix series Making a Murderer, the night featured a match with Chris Avery Quelling, an inmate of Manitowoc County, a nod to the popular series about the imprisonment of Steven Avery, a man some believe is innocent. The similarities end there however, as this inmate showed a vicious streak after his was freed of his shackles. This match was quickly over as Quelling overtook the smaller Clash and repeatedly slammed him to the mat, followed by simply pounding Clash with lefts and rights, before mercifully ending the match. Although the victor, Quelling was rewarded by being bound yet again and led away from the ring.

Four Corners Tag Match

Merry Men vs Maxwell Jacob Feinstein and Joe Bronson vs Massage Therapy vs Habib and The Revolving Blob

One of the most entertaining matches on the card, this bout was rife with hilarious spots with homerotic overtones. The match was fought under Lucha tag rules, which dictate that a tag can be made by simply rolling under the bottom rope. Max This led to a fast paced bout in which all four teams had a legitimate chance to win. The tandem of Massage Therapy would slow the action down, alternating from painful submissions to pain-relieving massage techniques. Their work culminated in a bottle of baby oil being squirted over their backs and chests, thus creating a human slip and slide. With friction eliminated, they launched headfirst into the crotch of a fallen opponent in the corner, only to have one of the Merry Men insisting the move be performed on him. In a display of his car washing skills, Habib, one half of the tandem of The Revolting Blob and Habib known as “Blobib”, sprayed down Massage Therapy and used his sponge to clear the ring of baby oil, in a side-splittingly hilarious moment. Just as it seemed that The Revolting Blob was going to score a win for his team, the team of Massage Therapy doubled teamed him and scored the pin fall, ending the most ridiculous match of the night.

Matt Classic vs The Abominable CPA

Although appearing at the show before the first bell and during intermission, Colt Cabana was conspicuous by his absence. However, the high-waisted trunk wearing Matt Classic, a true throwback, did his best to ruin the evening for The Abominable CPA. Dubbed the Uncharismatic Enigma, CPA stuck to his unconventional offense, tripping Classic and confounding the masked man with his seemingly never ending supply of clip-on ties. CPA had a strong following on this night and it spurred him on to victory, as he rolled up Matt Classic and came away with the win in front of his vociferous aficionados.

After the event, CPA and the Revolting Blob shared their thoughts on the night with Last Word on Sports.  The Blob was frank, saying “I’m not going to lie, when you have the second greatest principal in the world come to see you, come take a picture with you, it’s pretty humbling. Of course, I’ve been the world’s greatest principal since 1994. Belding had the spot before me and it’s good that we can be friendly and coexist”.

The Abominable CPA chimed in “maybe if everything works out, you guys could be the World’s Greatest Principals tag team and take on [Charlie] Haas and [Shelton] Benjamin.

Blob retorted “I don’t see why that wouldn’t happen, Pat Buck obviously has the deep pockets to get this done”. Only time will tell if this dream match will come to pass.

Heavyweight Title Fatal Four-way

Fallah Bahh vs Anthony Bowens vs Dan Maff vs Matt Macintosh (c)

The main event was a high impact and hard hitting encounter, whose combatants split the crowd’s favor in three, with Maff, Bahh and Bowens all garnering the cheers of those in attendance as they made their way to the ring. The Bad Apple Matt Macintosh, however, united the crowd in their dislike of the champion and he would give them yet another reason to do so by the end of the bout. Just when it seemed that the champion was going to drop the title, he made a quick cover and his main squeeze and valet, Hellen Vale held on to Anthony Bowens’s leg for dear life as he tried to break up the pin. Macintosh scored the pinfall and tried to make his way to the back, before Vale was scooped up by Dan Maff. As the crowd urged Maff to slam her down with an inverted death valley driver, Macintosh interceded on Vale’s behalf and the behemoth had second thoughts, dropping the petite paramour to the mat. With a show of ingratitude, Macintosh provoked Maff, who promptly scooped him and slammed him to the mat, to the roar of the crowd, sending the fans home happy.

WrestlePro will return to action next week, April 30th, in Rahway, New Jersey. Tickets for this event and as well as tickets for a September show featuring the legendary Nature Boy Ric Flair are available here.  This is certainly a company to look for when they visit your area.
